Can I use my 2009 macbook for LS?
I mean I don't need anything fancy right, as long as she has word and internet we're in business?
I see and read people purchasing the newest laptops, so I want to make sure, I'm not missing out on anything.

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. It's great. I put a ssd in it and upgraded the ram to 8gb. Both are very easy to do, and worthwhile in they're own right, but neither are necessary for law school. As long as you can run word you're good.
The caveat might be your schools exam software capability, so I'd check that out. I'm running Yosemite on my MBP though and it runs fine.

While they are somewhat BS, you should check out the minimum specs put forward by your schools IT dept.
This mostly comes into play because if something were to go wrong and your system fails to meet these specs, you give them an easy out not to try to solve your problem.

I think the only concern is it crashing during an exam. I had friends whose computers were constantly on the fritz, and a few of them had shit happen during exams. The peace of mind that came with having a new computer that I knew should function properly through finals was alone worth it to me. But you certainly don't need anything fancy.

no you cannot. federal law explicitly prohibits the use by law students of laptops manufactured before 2010 for any law school-related activities.
