It can also be basically synonymous with summer associate. At my firm I was a summer associate during 1L and 2L summers, but I was a law clerk during the school year (I worked ~20 hrs/wk while in school). There was no real difference in the work I did or my position at the firm, it was just that using the name "summer associate" for someone in January sounded odd I guess.
