What's Law School Like?

Post by mattf » Fri Jan 09, 2015 11:20 am

What was your first impression of law school? Did the classes seem intense to you or were they more laid back? How did you feel about the transition from UG to law school (even if you didn't go K-JD)? What are the professors like?

First impression - this is a lot less work than undergrad
Classes - seemed laid back, a lot of people stressed about cold calling but it was self-made stress
Transition - still felt like a lot less work than undergrad, but more stress towards finals (K-JD)
Professors - do a good job at pretending to care.

What was your major, Attax, if you don't mind sharing?

No real homework is nice, cold calls suck, you read lots of cases, finals are stressful but you can basically just do whatever for the first 2 months of the semester, professors are hit or miss.

I worked for 2 years b/w undergrad and law school - pretty easy transition imo if you have the right mindset as to what to expect

sum chill ppl, sum gunners. sum interesting professors, sum duds. sum coffee, sum cigs; perhaps sum adderall. sum late nights for LRW, sum drunk nights with friends. a fairly repetitive 2-3 months, with a month of crazy studying. feeling like you know nothing at the age of ~25, then the "aha!" moment when you understand negligence.

Laid back but a bit stressful at the end if you are at a top school; can't even imagine how stressful it would be at a lower ranked school...

really? my experience has been the opposite; there is considerably more work in LS than in undergrad.

My last impression now that I'm graduating is this is way less work. But 1L sucked. Some people don't need to study or were engineers or wannabe doctors in UG.

At times it really sucks but its predominantly chill with hints of irritating. Lots of interesting and inspiring people even if the material can be boring af. (Also lots of shitty strivers).

It's not that bad… I mean, it's pretty fucking bad, but it's not unbearable.

But if you want must know, if sleeping with half of your 1L class, becoming a pseudo-alcoholic, and receiving a ton of terrible advice on how to succeed in your first year sounds like your cup of tea, law school is right up your alley.

What was your major, Attax, if you don't mind sharing?
Chemistry

OP, I've never had as much free time as I do in law school. It is basically 20-30 hour weeks as a 1L up until November when it becomes crunch time.
