WI Legal Market

Post by Octavius » Mon Nov 03, 2014 2:13 am

Hello all - just curious as to what kind of grades (top 10%, 20%, etc.) from UW-Madison are competitive for Madison/Milwaukee firms. I'm thinking Quarles and Brady, Foley, Godfrey and Kahn, Michael Best, and the like.

Thanks for any input!

top 20% sounds about right for the cutoff for competitiveness. looking at the 2013 ABA disclosures, 28 out of 252 ended up at firms of 101+, which captures all the firms you mentioned plus some equivalents: http://law.wisc.edu/prospective/stats.h ... oyment2013. To have any real confidence about landing one of these firms one would want to be in the top 10%.

Great, thank you! Definitely some good data. Can any 2L OR 3L currently there give any input as well?

Tww pretty much said it--realistically it's more like 10% even if the official "cutoff" is 20%. I'm not at UW but I know the wisconsin market pretty well. It's pretty tough to get even from UW. You're competing with all your classmates plus T14 students with ties and some other top 10%ers from other schools with ties.

are you familiar with the hiring trends and standards of non-NALP firms, like DeWitt, Axley, etc?

Nope, sorry I should've specified. I'm mostly familiar with the bigger (ish) WI firms. Don't know anyone at the firms you mentioned
