Law School Employment Timeline

Post by whitespider » Mon Sep 08, 2014 7:15 pm

I know as a lowly 0L that I'm getting way ahead of myself, but I was wondering what the timeline looks like for summer and post-grad employment hiring.

From what I understand (which is very limited), there's a 1L and 2L OCI?

The 1L being for 1L summer. Or are the 1L interviews for summer positions called something else?

The 2L being for 2L summer (and then presumably a post-grad offer).

Then I guess theres no 3L OCI or anything for people who got no-offered?

Is that even remotely correct or am I way out there? If I'm kind of in the ballpark, around which months do these interviews occur?

Apologies if there's an idiot-proof thread already addressing this, please feel free to link me to it.

And again, yes, I know I'm way ahead of myself. Just curious about the process.

EDIT: Sorry! Reading through this, I can see it's super convoluted. Hopefully someone can make heads and tails of it.

What school are we talking about here?

1L OCI isn't much of a thing. 1Ls apply to big firm jobs around December 1st (that's the first day you can), anything not a firm is typically on different timelines. Mostly like March, April, sometimes later is when people get their PI/Gov/Judicial internships.

2L OCI is typically large (sometimes mid and boutique) size firms. Everything else is on its own timeline.

3L OCI is sometimes a thing depending on the school, usually it's more for people who got an offer and want to "trade up" to a different firm. No offering is sometimes the kiss of death but sometimes people can get a job during 3L OCI if they stuck out or got no offered.

1L OCI at my school was in January or February, 2/3L in August.

Ah, that makes sense.

Appreciate the response!

I'm a 0L, so was mostly just looking to understand the basics.

Also glad to learn we have a 1L OCI. I'm just looking forward to that reception for that firm that opened in Houston with the name I've forgotten.

Whoops.
