NYU 2L Taking Questions
I'm making a new thread as the other one has died down and I'm bored at work. I did relatively well and still managed to have a life and a girlfriend during 1L. I don't believe that doing well is all about luck (although, luck definitely has an effect). I am open to answering questions about how to attack law school, the LSAT, NYU in particular, or anything else that you heart desires.

Have you eaten at the dosa cart, and if so, what is your favorite dosa?

Re: NYU 2L Taking Questions
For the sake of alleviating your boredom:
Where are you working currently and what kinds of positions do most of your friends have for this summer?
Favorite and least favorite 1L classes?
How often were you able to get out and explore the city?
How did you survive the polar vortex?
(Can't think of any other questions at the moment, sorry!)

1) Don't want to out myself, but a PI place, and most of my friends are interning with judges or doing other types of PI jobs.
2) Favorites were probably Torts and Crim Law. Least favorite were probably Contracts and LR (though, I doubt I'm unique in that respect).
3) I'm a native New Yorker, but I had plenty of time on my hands to run around as I pleased, but time quickly dwindles a few weeks before finals.
4) Again, native New Yorker, but a good eskimo hat from Amazon and an extra pair of socks went a long way!

I'm also a 2L, so if 123 doesn't mind I'll jump in here too.fkt18 wrote:For the sake of alleviating your boredom:

Worked for a venture capital fund and it was awesome. Most of my friends got the types of jobs that they wanted; people interested in big firms got those, people interested in PI got those and a bunch of people worked for judges. I don't think I know of anyone without a job or with something that they hate.

My favorite class was torts because the teacher was hilarious and you can always come up with a hypo that involves little johnny losing an arm, a leg, or an eye (or sometimes dying, "...and little Johnny is dead; how sad."). Least favorite was CivPro because it is unbelievably boring.
How often were you able to get out and explore the city?
Saw a few shows, went for drinks or had dinner in just about every neighborhood of the city. Spent most Sundays reading (non-textbooks) in central park with the GF. The 30 days before finals were spent almost exclusively with my study partner .
How did you survive the polar vortex?
From the Northeast, so not as big a deal for me, but it was pretty rough.

Thanks! This will be my first time living outside of CA for more than a few months, so I'm both excited and apprehensive for NYC (and its weather).NYULawStudent123 wrote:1) Don't want to out myself, but a PI place, and most of my friends are interning with judges or doing other types of PI jobs.fkt18 wrote:For the sake of alleviating your boredom:

ETA: Thanks bailey8078 as well, that makes me feel better (minus your answer to #4)!

I want to hop in about the comment about big firms. Are you referring to 1L or 2L summer because 1L summer those jobs are super slim, unless, of course, your friends who applied for them all had tip-top grades.

Re: NYU 2L Taking Questions
1L summer. I agree that they aren't super common, but if people want to SA they should mass mail every market until they get an offer. These are not impossible to get from NYU and many can be gotten before 1L grades come out. I think "super slim" is buying into the TLS belief that these are unicorn jobs; they aren't. Of my friends that had them many had excellent grades, others were simply either lucky or persistent enough that they got offers.NYULawStudent123 wrote:bailey8078 wrote:I'm also a 2L, so if 123 doesn't mind I'll jump in here too.fkt18 wrote:For the sake of alleviating your boredom:

Re: NYU 2L Taking Questions
Also a rising NYU 2L who is killing time at work. And, similar to NYULawStudent123 I managed to do relatively well while still enjoying NYC and spending a good amount of time with the SO.
Where are you working currently and what kinds of positions do most of your friends have for this summer? I am currently working at a NYC firm. People I know got a good mix of jobs - several are in local government, a couple are working with PDs, a few others are doing firms (including two w/ Texas ties in Texas) and the rest are in various non-profits (mostly in NYC). There are also a decent number of people who are full-time research assistants.
Favorite and least favorite 1L classes? My favorites were Torts and Contracts - but that was because we had great professors for both of them. The quality of the professor made a much bigger impact than I expected. Sadly, this meant that most everyone in my section did not enjoy spring semester as much as fall (my least favorite was probably Legislation and the Regulatory State).
How often were you able to get out and explore the city? Quite a bit earlier in each semester, probably a few times a week. Though I often ended up staying in or close to the village out of laziness. If one wants to explore the city, they have the time - especially in the first two months of each semester.
How did you survive the polar vortex? I complained, but luckily student housing is so close to class that even in the worst weather I did not suffer that much.

Re: NYU 2L Taking Questions
Was there any indication that below a certain level of grades, a person would have serious difficulty in the job market? If so, where was that cutoff?

That's all relative. There are people concerned at median, but I'd say bottom quarter may have real concern where interview skills are super important. But I'm not expert on this.

Re: NYU 2L Taking Questions
People below 3.29 were required to submit bid lists for review to make sure they didn't shoot themselves in the foot. But the most common grade range to fall into was 3.0-3.29 according to OCS. I would say <3.0 would have reason to panic, but that is far below medianBuddyHoller wrote:Was there any indication that below a certain level of grades, a person would have serious difficulty in the job market? Yeah, <3.0 is ~bottom 10%, which is super panic mode. But even hire than that like <3.15 is no sure thing.
