0L meeting with Dean (what do i say..?) help

Post by hookemhomie » Sat Jul 05, 2014 8:18 pm

so im attending a t14 ls next year, 0L, i did not attend the schools ASW so im coming to a private tour this week. the FO set me up with a meeting with a couple of Deans which surprised me (asked for simple tour and some Ls to speak with but the secretary ended up stating i would begin my tour by meeting with the dean)

i don't really know what to ask the dean, i don't want to come as an ignorant 0L which i sort of am tbh, what are some questions y'all would have asked if you were in this position? chances are i meld into the faceless horde of 0Ls im sure he has already met but i just wanted some insight so i don't seem like a complete nub. plz help, thanks.

for resume-building prestige, many positions at (some?/many?/all?) law schools are assigned the title of dean (dean of students, dean of admissions, dean of this or that, etc). Find out what dean it is, probably gonna be one of the ones focused on outreach/admissions meaning they'll be friendly and personable. Don't sweat it, just be normal. And know that they'll probably forget or only vaguely remember you by the time school rolls around which isn't a big deal bc they usually can't help you get what you want - only your grades can help you get what you want

Don't make this more than it is. As previous poster said, lots of administrative pple have titles of dean. You're admitted in the school, so relax. They are welcoming you.

Don't worry too much. Just have a chill (but not too chill) conversation with them...lol. Ask them about housing/food/academic life/prof availability/1L tips. I mean, if it were my first time in the city, I'd ask them what's the one food spot I absolutely need to check out before leaving.

I get the sense that most 0Ls don't have everything figured out before they attend law school, and some don't know really what to expect. So just treat this as an opportunity to really get some stuff figured out.

If you want to ask more serious questions, you can do that too. For example, if you want to be a litigator and are curious about the school's clerking resources, you can ask about that process. There's a lot of talk about the importance of advocacy on a student's behalf, and you can explore how that's done.

"Hello, thanks for meeting with me," would be a start.

I'll save you some anxiety and let you know that the dean is fully expecting you to have nothing interesting to say.

"So excited to be coming here … something something… what a wonderful campus …" will do.

I am a 0L who did a breakfast session with the Dean of the LS I plan to attend with a small group of other students, While it wasn't 1-on-1 we talked about individual goals, how the school will help us meet that, what they're doing to get more grads hired over the next few years, etc. Although I wasn't committed to attend it was nice to discuss these things.
