Commute from DC to Tyson's
Does anyone do this commute? How bad is it?

Drive or public transit? Public transit, you'll be better off when the silver line starts up (whenever that happens), but right now you'll probably need to take the Orange line to Dunn-Loring and then take a ten minute bus ride to Tysons.

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
I did Silver Spring to Vienna for quite a while, so I've got a strong grip of both areas. The Silver Line will open in Tysons by end of the year (hopefully much sooner), so that'll make the commute quite easy (~30 minutes from Metro center). Driving, you're looking at 45-60 minutes.
Which direction are you headed? What part of DC? That makes a big difference, obviously.

Hell on earth, pre-Silver line. But will that even help? It's not exactly walkable once you get to Tyson's.

+1 if you work in Tyson's, there's no reason to live in DC. And if u want DC night life, it'll be plenty accessible from Arlington.Desert Fox wrote:Live in Arlington bro.
Otherwise, driving should be 30min ish? Don't do public transit (pain in the ass) until silver line is up and running... Which may take another century or two

Yeah, bit of an exaggeration fueled by the lies I've been told by wmata .Desert Fox wrote:silver line should be running within three months.
They're starting test runs and, unless shit hits the fan, it should open up by the end of the summer

Is Arlington really "urban" though? I've heard Clarendon is nice, but was leaning towards Foggy Bottom.
Would be driving at first, but would really prefer metro. That's supposed to be what, like 40-ish minutes once its up?

Would probably just live at Foggy Bottom so I don't have to push through all the extra DC traffic. Looking like I'd do a straight shot on 66, and the office is at Tyson's Galleria basically.flawschoolkid wrote:I did Silver Spring to Vienna for quite a while, so I've got a strong grip of both areas. From Rosylnn to Ballston is about as urban as DC gets. The rest of arlington is suburban. But so is most of NW DC.
Find out if the silver line is even viable for you before you move to Foggy Bottom (which kinda sucks BTW, I'd rather be in courthouse/clarendon). It's only a couple minutes more on the metro, but driving it'll be worse.

Live near the Court House or Rosslyn metro. You'll be close to DC and only a 15-20 minute train ride (once the silver line opens) to Tyson's.

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
I don't know if the reverse commute is better (in DC they tend not to be since the employment centers are scattered around), but my commute from around Tysons (few miles west on 7) into DC was more like 60-75 minutes each way last summer. I-66 is a parking lot during rush hour.lhanvt13 wrote:+1 if you work in Tyson's, there's no reason to live in DC. Rosslyn sucks.
I'd live near Ballston. The difference between Ballston and Courthouse on train times to dc is negligible.

Follow the advice regarding living in Arlington. Tyson's is kind of out there. Plus youll probably need a car to go grocery shopping, etc. Where in Rosslyn/ Courthouse you can walk everywhere.

Parts of Arlington on the orange line are just as urban as most of DC, and the city nightlife will be plenty accessible on the weekend. The drive from Arlington in the morning wouldn't be TOO bad, since you'd be going against traffic.

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
myeh, reverse traffic isn't TOO bad. still, 30 min is the (low end) mark for living in Foggy or GTown. and once you get past Falls church, it opens up quite a bit. I'd still say give yourself an hour, since traffic around that area varies a lot because of construction, accidents, and idiots who can't on/off-ramprayiner wrote:I don't know if the reverse commute is better (in DC they tend not to be since the employment centers are scattered around), but my commute from around Tysons (few miles west on 7) into DC was more like 60-75 minutes each way last summer. Protip: If ever in bumper to bumper, stick to the right lane. All the n3rds tryn' to save time get in the left-most lanes and end up taking longer than the right-hand lane.

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
Thanks for the responses. Lots of strong opinions here.
I'm looking for something vaguely like Lincoln Park/Wicker Park in Chicago. From what I hear Arlington is the best bet, though I usually like the vibe around colleges which is why Foggy Bottom popped in my head. I really like Georgetown, but I'm not going to be that far from the Metro.
Any particular part of Arlington? Though not quite hipster level myself, I do like the areas they generally populate.
Speaking of HOV... is it HOV going out to Tyson's? I read 66 is going into DC, but not into Tysons. Was an old post though.

I don't take HoV so maybe someone knowledgeable can tell you. In terms of where in Arlington, personal preference: Clarendon > ballston >>>>>>> courthouse. Courthouse is nice but just not my thing. You should check out the area and night life before deciding though; each have a pretty diff atmospheredanquayle wrote:Thanks for the responses. Lots of strong opinions here.
