Columbia's jd / llm Frankfurt, Paris etc - worthless?

Post by PDX4343 » Mon Jun 02, 2014 3:07 am

I'm just wondering what the point of the joint jd / international llm at Columbia is. Seems like it's just a flame. Is that true? What would it potentially help you do career-wise if anything?

I don't know anything about it, but from the name, my first guess is international transactions. You can do that without it, but if you need to bolster your international credentials, maybe this would help.

If you want to practice in those jurisdictions it would help. Might also help with UN / ICJ clerking / other international bodies. Generally it's pretty silly, esp if you're just going to work at a US law firm, I'd only recommend it if you have very specific goals.

Some credibility in the specific local market for the country in which you get it...if, and only if, you are planning to stay there.

Worthless otherwise. The fact that it's "international" doesn't give you street credibility in the U.S. You are better off getting an LLM in International something or other at Georgetown or another school in the U.S. known for the particular program of interest. These have better cache overseas than the vice versa route you are considering.
