Feel free to comment on what you did and what you thought/felt about the experience as a 1L - good or bad.

Externed for state appellate judge. Great experience. Only bad part was no pay, and lots of parking and dry cleaning fees to pay for.

I can relate there. I'm an 0L beginning this fall and I got a very relevant legal externship at a government agency this summer. Unfortunately it's unpaid and going to be very expensive living/community in DC.Ohiobumpkin wrote:Externed for state appellate judge. Great experience. Why is clerk/intern with a politician an option but not public interest/non-profit? Those are much more prevalent than working for politicians...
Anyway, I was a law clerk at Legal Aid.

My bad. Just chose some various examples and after the fact I realized I missed some important ones like PI, which clearly don't fit in with the examples I chose.Pleasye wrote:Why is clerk/intern with a politician an option but not public interest/non-profit? assuming the first option means SA at a big firm...
...I don't know why you didn't put working at a small law firm as a choice.
I got paid at a small firm during 1L summer. So "other legal job"

+1. I too interned at Legal Aid (immigration). Excellent experience overall--great colleagues, meaningful substantive work, lots of client contact. I was not paid by my employer, but received two outside stipends.Pleasye wrote:Why is clerk/intern with a politician an option but not public interest/non-profit? Im pretty sure category that meant any firm; the number wouldn't be so disproportionately high if it was large firm 1L SAs.Nova wrote:assuming the first option means SA at a big firm...

fair enough. its just that pretty much no small firms call them SAs & most of my classmates who work at small firms don't just summer there.jbagelboy wrote:Im pretty sure category that meant any firm; the number wouldn't be so disproportionately high if it was large firm 1L SAs.Nova wrote:assuming the first option means SA at a big firm...

I know UofC pays a stipend for any unpaid legal work other than judicial externships. I assumed this was the norm at t14 at least.Cicero76 wrote:How did you guys get money to live? Can't know for sure. People with good outcomes (e.g. 1L SAs) are more likely to respond to the question. Also: everybody lies.jbagelboy wrote:Im pretty sure category that meant any firm; the number wouldn't be so disproportionately high if it was large firm 1L SAs.

Yeah I wouldn't put much faith in one of these anonymous polls being probative of anything really but I knew lots of people at regional schools that worked in solo offices. Maybe they're referring to those as "SAs at Law Firms." Pretty much everyone I knew at my school did a fed judicial internship or fed gov't internship. I think they thought it was "prestigious" or something stupid.

Externed for a federal district court judge; it was an awesome experience.
I budgeted each semester's COL loans to stretch over 6 months instead of 4. As a student (who wasn't taking summer classes), I only had to pay $13 for a summer bus pass, but I walked nearly every day. I brought my lunch most days. It's not particularly difficult to live on a budget in the midwest (unless you're in Chicago).
