What does working "in house" mean?

Post by emu42 » Sat Apr 26, 2014 2:08 am

Dumb question, but what does this mean and how do you do it? What is the pay difference, and the hours difference?

It generally means working for a corporation in their legal department. The pay and hours are generally less than biglaw, though the pay per hour worked is usually higher.

And one usually does this by working at a biglaw firm for awhile and then moving into the legal department of one of the companies it represents?

I have a question about in-house: is it a bad idea no matter what to start your career in-house? Can I call someone who knows these things and chat?

Pro-tip don't lecture people about where graduates end up if you don't know what the fuck in house is.

I might change "usually" to "often."

1. There aren't many in house positions available for people straight out of law school, so it's usually easier to work for a law firm for a while first.
2. I don't know, can you?

If you are interested in working in house, you should pick your practice area carefully (you should probably do that anyway) because working in house varies across industries. Although, like all law practice, there is significant overlap (i.e. you are a paper monkey wherever you work in law, except maybe as a P.D. or something), working in house at a financial services company and working in house at McDonalds will mean that you spend most of your time working on different issues and areas of law.
