and when it does happen, are you traveling to other cities like LA, SF, DC, or are you literally flying to Europe?

No.

Partially depends on practice area, but generally no. As a junior associate in a securities group, you can get sent to do diligence if the company on which diligence being conducted is sensitive about loading documents into a data room. It's fun the first time, but after that, it's a pain in the ass because you usually have other work to do and are under a time crunch while doing the diligence to get it done before you fly back.

I've flown to other cities for deal dinners, but the turn-around is too tight to do anything.

no i actually don't like traveling for work all that much. I was hoping to stay planted in an NYC office and then use vacation time to enjoy other cities.

if you know anything about NYC corp practices, do they pretty much go to the same office all days of the year except vacations? or are you flying to LA to do due diligence or w.e. for paramount pictures more than a few times a year?

Sure. If you do FCPA work you can spend months at a time in various third-world shitholes.

Real talk: You really don't want to travel for work. Travel for work is a misfortune, not a perk.

For the most part, biglaw associates don't travel. The work that biglawyers do can pretty much be done anywhere in the country so there is no reason to travel. Of course if there may be trials that can be an exception, but having to travel to Texarkana (for a patent trial in EDTX for example) is hardly anything to look forward to. Moreover, very little time is actually spent at trial meaning that your travel time is limited at best.

Do NYC transactional lawyers travel to flyover country or the West Coast or Europe?

I don't think you get it, there's zero reason to travel. In a typical corporate deal, two businesses work out a deal, and then call in a law firm. The firm starts with due diligence, which basically consists of an online document exchange, where the sides upload contracts, board minutes, stock subscriptions, etc. Some junior associate reviews them all at his desk. Partners and mid levels then send a draft agreement. The two sides exchange a few red line drafts over email, and then eventually get on a conference call and negotiate any sticking points. That's sent off to the sides for closing.

All done without any attorneys leaving their desk, except a trip to the conference room for the group call
