Big Law Associates in high COL city: Life and/with Debt

Post by Theopliske8711 » Tue Apr 01, 2014 11:59 am

Not sure if there is a thread that already exists, I looked around a bit but it may have missed it. Sorry ahead if that's the case.

Just wanted to get a picture of how living has been like for those who are doing Big Law in NYC or any other high COL city with debt. Particularly, when you were a first-year associate. Although it figures in, I'm not really asking about the actual debt numbers (I know that there's a thread for that) just wondering how your living arrangements have been? Which city? Single or married? How have you managed and what do your repayments look like? Did you have a plan for life and repayment? Has it worked the way you planned? How far away or close to the office are you (can't imagine being farther than 30 mins away with Biglaw hours)? Issues you have dealt with? Advice (other than don't do it)?

Living anywhere on a biglaw salary is insanely easy if you're single, even with 200k+ in debt. The only people who might have it tough are married people with kids where one spouse stays home with the kids full time.

I mean, what if you are assuming what most here tell you to assume: that you can't bet on surviving too long, and so want to payback the debt as gas as possible.
