Law School & Sobriety

Post by manillabay » Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:35 pm

If one doesn't drink anymore, how would one fit in and/or how prevalent is it compared to undergrad?

You don't have to fit in, at least outside school hours.

The majority of your classmates will become borderline alcoholics. By the end of law school one in five will be alcoholics. A lot of social activities revolve around alcohol.

That said, I have a couple friends who don't drink. One goes Out with us, drinks soda and eats. The other doesn't, he mostly hangs with the other non-drinkers. There will be a number of them. Alcoholics who've done their 12 steps, Mormons, the odd teetotaler, etc. so it's not the end of the world. You just have to realize you are either going to miss some social events or have to be around people who are drinking a lot.

I hardly ever drink, and I don't seem to be ostracized. Do you think law school is a high school prom afterparty or something?

I don't drink, it works out perfectly fine. however, it really depends on:

1. How outgoing you are.
2. Are you comfortable in bar.
3. Are you in a relationship/able to get laid outside a bar situation?

1. mildly
2. working on it
3. 5/10

It's going to be rough, but more manageable than a lot of other situations. I would be more worried about triggers than being ostracized. PM me if you have specific concerns
