The merits of being a good golfer?
So, semi-serious, how often do current students/recent graduates actually play sports (tennis, golf...etc) or other related activities to network? Does any of this ever actually happen?

When I'm networking Wachtell partners, it's usually the squash courts. For some reason though, Senators won't chill with me unless it's at a golf course.

I had a prof tell me that being a good golfer was more important than studying. I'm not kidding.

this prof. I like this prof. So if you tell him, you wont be in class today because you are working on your short game- that would be a legitimate excuse/ not count against you??

Personally I think it would be advantageous to be an adequate but poor golfer. People will like you better if they beat you, but you don't want to be so bad as to stand out as awful.

This is great advice.Kikero wrote:Personally I think it would be advantageous to be an adequate but poor golfer. People will like you better if they beat you, but you don't want to be so bad as to stand out as awful.
Be good enough to get on the green with the chance to one-putt for par (while buzzed), then rush your putting. You won't hold anyone up, you won't get made fun of, and you won't kick anyone's ass.
Also, you get one practice swing and one false start per stroke, at maximum. Unless you want everyone to hate you, of course.

I really need to get out to the range and work on my drive. Last time I went it was pitiful...

Re: The merits of being a good golfer?
Given the culture of my firm, learning how to golf was one of the first things I picked up as a “need to know.” Not very good at golf and unfortunately tennis (which I am respectable at) is not need-to-know. The only time I was trapped into going to the greens a torrential rain rolled in and thankfully ended the game on the first hole.
Caution. Some partners and clients take golf a lot more seriously than they should, thus playing adequately might not always be an option. So yeah, hit the driving range as often as you can. I will say it should be fun (once you get it down). You don't have to beat 'em, just don't look ridiculous.

If it helps you bring in clients, it's useful. I don't know anyone who has brought in clients solely through golfing. It's usually a combination of--oh, i dunno--20 years of trial experience in a relevant field and golfing.

0L here. My wife was telling me I better start getting good at golfing. And I was like, fuck that. The surest way for me to lose a contact/client is for them to see my conduct on the golf course. far from professional.

At the DA'S office where I work and hope to be an attorney at, a lot of guys enjoy playing basketball. Which is nice since I played in high school and I really hate/suck at golf lolCicero76 wrote:When I'm networking Wachtell partners, it's usually the squash courts.
