Anyone with PI/Gov experience in Florida?

Post by Charlestonsfb60 » Wed Feb 26, 2014 7:17 pm

Hey guys-
Would like to do small/medium PI/Gov work in north Florida or South Georgia as a PD or ADA. Was really considering FSU as they gave me a good scholarship but it seems that no FLA schools have an LRAP program. Even with FSU scholarship (which I think is pretty much the most they give out) I would still be looking at around 70-75k total COA. Is there really no financial relief available to those who want to do this kind of work in FLA?? Is there a commonly used alternative to LRAP that FLA PD's and ADA's use or is everyone who takes out loans just screwed? Also, I have not idea how PAYE earn works as I did not have any undergrad debt. Is this a viable option for this level o debt?

Thanks for any information!

Yes, PAYE is a viable option. Still that is a lot of debt. Are you in-state for tuition purposes?

Going to school for the least amount of debt possible, or the best LRAP (the best of the T-14 LRAPs) would be your best bet. If you want to be in FL, going to school there is still probably the best option but I am sure people will give you different opinions. FSU does give full tuition scholarships. Did you get much money from them?

I would be out of state for the first year at FSU. This is unfortunate because I spent 90% of my life in Florida lol.
They offered me 45K. So the first year would still be really expensive as an OOS student but the last two years would be dirt cheap. My wife will also be with me and will be contributing to living expenses so that should help keep costs down somewhat. But still, no kind of LRAP is alarming for someone like me.

Im definitely trying to keep costs down but every other school I have been considering seems to have some LRAP for those seeking PI.

Don't forget about PSLF. Ten years in PI plus PAYE and that 75k disappears in no time.
