I'm thinking of selling my car soon since i barely use it. I will be attending law school in a populated metropolitan area and have the option of using public transportation if need be but I'll be living ten minutes walking from the school. Do I really need a car in law school?

Just depends on what your options are for public trans. I sold my car before moving to DC. Metro has been very reliable so far - nice not having insurance payments/parking fees, gas etc..

This question would be better addressed in your school's forum, since it depends so much on location. But generally if there's public transit nearby, there's nothing specific about being a law student that requires a car...

The only thing to keep in mind is if you want to work/intern/extern during law school, and where, having a car might be useful, depending on how good the public transportation really is.

Yea the city I'm moving to has a very efficient metro rail system and the school is like in the middle of everything. Even the DA's office is a short 25 min ride away on the metro (where I plan to extern) and downtown is about 15 min away. I think I'm gonna go ahead and post my listing on a few sites. I REALLY hate driving and being stuck in traffic gives me anxiety so I'm already avoiding driving in my hometown as much as possible by walking or biking everywhere or taking the local trai n

It's Miami. If I was living west of US1 I think I'd probably need a car but downtown, where all relevant government agencies and offices are, is about 25 min away by metro rail

I sold my car before moving to Chicago and glad I did. I love not having to pay for gas and worrying about serious bodily injury every winter when I had to commute to work

I would LOVE to have my car in Chicago (it's sitting in my dad's driveway), but I live downtown near school so parking is fucking ridiculous. But I'd really only use it to drive to Costco and to Evanston for hockey practice. Aside from that, it's entirely unnecessary. As much as I hate being carsick on the CTA, it really does go everywhere.

That said, I've never heard anyone describe Miami's transit system quite so glowingly. Is it really that good, or is it like Seattle where yeah, it exists, but everyone just drives anyway?

I think it depends on where you go to school. Personally, I need it. I have a friend who goes to George Washington Law in DC and he sold his before he moved too. However, you must think: Is it extra for parking at the place where you live? Would you only be going to school all the time? How far do you have to carry groceries? Can you afford a cab ride/Uber every time or not. Where is the nearest store where you can get you house supplies/toiletries?

For some reason, I have peace when driving to class in my car. I get some "me time" Its going to be a long three years and you may get tired of having to rely on someone else or something else to get somewhere. Now, assuming these places are further from your house and you are willing to pay extra money to get to these places for three HARD years, then you probably won't need a car.

Then you don't really need a car - for you it would seem like a luxury and not a necessity. (Just don't piss off your girlfriend haha)

You 100% need a car for Miami.

I went to undergrad there without a car and totally regret not having one. Even though your girlfriend has a car, she will literally have to drive you everywhere. If you've visited, I'm sure you saw there is NO public transportation, the metro takes you nowhere (look at its map, totally useless).

No matter where you live, UNLESS it's South Miami (aka right around UM) you need a car. Don't be fooled by the fact that Miami thinks of itself as a big city. It's all urban sprawl, unless you want to live in downtown or SB which is happening but where you will definitely have trouble getting anywhere. Traffic in Miami is horrible, but the public transportation is worse.

I promise you need a car.

ETA: Just read what you said about living 10 mins from school. Obviously you should do what sounds good to you, but if I go back to Miami this fall (still deciding) I can't imagine not having a car, even living in Red Road or somewhere near Dadeland.

I was born and raised in Miami. I would NEVER recommend someone live there without a car. The city of Miami is very large, as is the county. It is very spread out - the definition of urban sprawl. I have never met a single person that happily relies on public transport full time. The train is almost useless and buses are not timely. I mean, I guess it can be done, but there is a reason that the highways are so horrible down there - everyone uses them. Many of my friends are UM students and everyone has cars, despite its relatively central location. It's just not practical, in my opinion, considering that even things like the post office can be miles away.

Edit, and a personal anecdote: I started taking the metro to work this new year (I work in downtown Miami). It was winter, which isn't saying much because our winter is just a slightly colder summer, and I was still sweaty and uncomfortable by the time I got to work. Needless to say, I asked for my parking pass back within a week.
