I know of several firms (unmentioned in the article) that are doing this stealthily. It seems like a great idea to me.

Firms are exploring a lot of alternatives to the traditional hiring model. It's how I got my job.

My firm cut their summer program way down and now hires a lot more on an as-needed basis for specific practice groups. That way they can keep their offer rate percentage and have work for people.
Instead of working for any partner, I only work for one and his specific clients.
