NY Law School --> Cali Firm?
Hi, I was just wondering if it were possible/how the following would work. I'm going to law school in NY (Dozo) and I don't intend on transferring out, but I was wondering if I were interested in moving out west post graduation, how would I get into an LA firm? Is it possible/reasonable? Just thinking/wondering? I know how OCI and stuff works (mostly?), but I'm confused as to how that would translate across the country.
Thanks.
Thanks.

To answer your inquiry as to the probability of practicing in Cali after graduation, it looks like only 2.3% of the C/O 2012 wound up with CA employment (see link above). In other words, your chances of ending up there are not great; you would have to be incredibly proactive (and lucky) to do so upon graduation.

going to need somewhere in the ballpark of top 10% grades to get a look from california firms (assuming biglaw as the goal) from cardozo

Without ties how realistic is it to get SF from say Harvard or CCN? Is it possible to work in NYC for 2 or 3 years and then transfer offices?

The thing is, there will be virtually no CA firms at Dozo's OCI. You'll be mostly on your own when it comes to finding a job in California, and that's going to be really, really rough. Someone above posted the LST 2-point-something percent of Dozo grads working in California stat, and I know it's probably tempting to say 'that's self-selection.' It may be, to a point, but it's also degree portability.cutebookwormxoxo wrote: I know how OCI and stuff works (mostly?), but I'm confused as to how that would translate across the country.

Don't go to Dozo unless you'll be happy working in NY when you graduate. If you want California, go to a school with a national reach or go to school in California. Dozo is neither.

Cardozo has a special OCI for west coast firms in which you go to an OCI event on the West Coast. While very few Cardozo students go west, I know my legal writing TA got a biglaw position in California. His second summer he worked for a firm, and then was hired to work in their California office.

From CLS/NYU, sure.
What you need to do is get biglaw so you can either lateral within the firm or develop a skill set that will allow you to transfer between national firms. It's going to do you no good to work as a Suffolk County DA, learn the intricacies of the New York Penal Law, and then try to look for jobs in California. Your experience just won't translate.
But since so few Dozo grads get biglaw, retake is the best option.
