Since you included Phoenix as the "southern US" I'm assuming you just mean anything geographically south of the middle of the country here, not "The South" per se, in which case I'd say probably LA or San Diego are your best bets. Of the cities you put on your poll, I'd go with Houston. They have a ton of medical and biotech innovation going on there.

Yah, seriously, only people from Australia think Phoenix is in the south. That being said, not a bad place to practice IP law at all. Quite the growing sector actually.

If Texas, Dallas should probably be on your list, especially for IP litigation. Eastern district (and now I think northern district) get a lot of it. Someone who knows more about IP should probably talk on the topic though, since I don't know much.

No, Washington D.C. is in the south. Its not culturally southern anymore but historically Maryland has been considered a southern state and was south of the Mason Dixon line. AZ on the other hand is in no conceivable way part of the south.

You high bro? You don't think that the Research Triangle is a good place to practice IP law? What do you think they do there?

Raleigh, Durham and Cary are all Top 20 cities for inventions based on number of patent applications per year: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... leigh.html

Depends on type of IP you want to practice.

Why Houston but not Dallas? Dallas has much more going on, IP-wise. Plus EDTX and NDTX, especially EDTX, are big patent districts.

Because I didn't apply to SMU. The list of cities is based on the schools I applied to. I agree that Dallas is a significant secondary market. Thanks for the info on EDTX and NDTX being big patent districts. 8)

Why Houston but not SMU? You enjoy being shot at or something?

Doesn't Mobile have some brand new biotech corridor that's supposed to have a ton of money getting pumped into it? I thought I read that somewhere. If it's true you might have a shot at getting some money from 'bama and graduating as a big fish in a brand new pond. Probably a bad idea if you don't want to live in Mobile though...

If biotech=medical biotech, then Houston. The medical center is bigger than some of those smaller cities (only mild hyperbole).
