Q re: Mail Merge for 1L SAs
Incoming 1L to CCN here. Currently getting my resume and CLs up to date (have the template for both resume/CL from last year's OCS guide). I'm wondering how do people generally mass email the V100/NLJ250 to submit submit their 1L SA apps. Do you have to create an excel sheet of all firms and the mail merge via Outlook or can you do this through NALP or some other organization, perhaps for a fee?
I'm asking because I want know if I need to learn mail merge before I move to NYC. And I want everything set up so I can just send out all 1L SA apps 12/1 with minimal time/effort detracting from finals prep.
Tyia for your help. I'm posting in this subforum because the Q seems more appropriate to me here than 'Ask a Law Student', but feel free to move mods.

The fact that you got into a CCN but couldn't follow the instructions in the announcement at the top of this board shows what an lol law school admissions are. Consider getting a refund on your tuition before your reading comprehension skills put you at the bottom of the class.

Also, marvelous use of the anonymous feature, that's exactly what it is intended for.

Did fatduck put you up to this to gain support for the idea to not let anonymous users start threads?

lol is a very common noun, sir. And if you're referring to a vs. an, lol is clearly pronounced "el-oh-el" and not "lawl."fatduck wrote:nevdash wrote:The fact that you got into a CCN but couldn't follow the instructions in the announcement at the top of this board shows what an lol law school admissions are. Re: Q re: Mail Merge for 1L SAs
I sent out a bunch of apps but I never could get the mail merge to work flawlessly. I always had to fill in some changes myself. On NALP's data, some firms' names were all caps, others were written oddly, others had different offices in different fields. I dunno, it might be possible but I couldn't figure out how to do a pure mail merge.Anonymous User wrote:Incoming 1L to CCN here. I ended up doing them manually off a template, spending about five minutes per app. I sent out about 70. I did not get a 1L SA, but most people, even with good grades, don't.

Re: Q re: Mail Merge for 1L SAs
Wow people are shitting on the OP hilariously in this thread. He probably doesn't deserve (all) of it, but still great.
More for posterity than for OP:
Mail merge is a great tool if you know how to you use it. I sent out over 200 applications for 1L SAs this way, and did not have to make any manual changes. Granted, I did not get one, and chances are neither will you unless you have substantial work experience AND top grades, a great law school with SOLID (went to high school there) ties to a secondary market that hires lots of 1Ls, like Houston or Birmingham, or are a URM.
You need to spend a lot of time making the Excel document look right; think about how it will translate to the mail merge, and edit it accordingly. "If/Then" commands in the word document can also be very useful, especially if you're applying to multiple markets.

Re: Q re: Mail Merge for 1L SAs
Will OCS teach you how to set up the merge or did you learn so simply via online tutorials?
I may just set up a template like the poster ^^ and spend ~5m and app sending them out. Seems like too big a risk to take if youve never done a merge before. x200 firms that's ~17 hours though which is quite a bit of study time in early Dec.
How much would it hurt you to apply the day after your list final, I.e. 12/15 vs. 12/1? Obviously it's a long shot no matter how to slice it but in both cases the firm won't have your fall grades. Does two weeks really make a huge difference?
And tbh I don't think I did anything wrong here other than perhaps putting my Q in the wrong subforum. I politely made a post about a topic that wasn't sufficiently covered in search. And the very first reply I get is some jaded, aggressive dude saying I'm gonna fail 1L. Lolwut? I'm jus trying to get my act in order before the fall grind bro.
Tyia for any helpful advice.

Me too, ha! Though if I were OP, I'd be more worried about the other boys and girls liking me than mail merge.thederangedwang wrote:He's better than me I must admitdrbarry987 wrote: And tbh I don't think I did anything wrong here other than perhaps putting my Q in the wrong subforum. Re: Q re: Mail Merge for 1L SAs
OP, dont worry about these posters shitting on you. If there's one thing I've learned through TLS, is that there are very insecure people on here that worry about under-performing (due to their own laziness) or being beat by smart, dedicated, hardworking people such as yourself.
The very fact you demonstrate such initiative and gung-ho-ness when it comes to 1L stuff strikes fear into the hearts of these posters as they know the can never compete with the likes of you. So they resort to petty insignificant attacks on your social awareness.
I dont have an answer for your question, but keep doing what you're doing and good things will happen. Dont let these posters get you down, ignore their advice, and shoot for that 1L SA!
In fact, career services at your school should appreciate you taking the initiative and finding time to set up a meeting with them to discuss your 1L SA search...if I were you, I would go ahead and set up a meeting with them before Nov 1st (which is when all the other more lazy 1L's finally start to get their act together).
Best of luck.

.. uhh, whatever. You aren't even allowed to talk to career services about employment until after November. You are an 0L yourself and have no idea what you're talking about.thederangedwang wrote:OP, dont worry about these posters shitting on you.
