0L who deferred at Mich a year to stay at my current job. I have been working in Miami the past 2 years, and I'l have 3 yrs WE in the city by the time I matriculate in fall 2012.
I am just trying to get a better understanding of the market down here. A number of major firms seems to have offices in Miami -- do they take summer associates?
Also, is there anything I can be doing with my year down here to network before going off to law school? I am not by any means set on Miami as a place to settle, but it seems like a pretty good market -- especially without any top school in the area feeding into it.
Appreciate any thoughts from current law students or graduates with experience in the market.

Re: Miami Market?
The big firms take less than 100 SA's combined. The most any one firm is taking next year is 7. Most are taking between 2-5. The market is super competitive, and the SA spots typically go to above median T-14 kids with iron clad ties and the people at the tippy top of the FL schools. Neither of those things though give you a fantastic shot just due to the complete dearth of SA positions.

Re: Miami Market?
Based on everything I have read, Miami is a pretty small market, comparatively. Assuming I get into Harvard and graduate somewhere around the middle (a massive assumption, I realize, but indulge me), would my wife's family's living in the area (they are Brazilian, but her mom is an exec with JP Morgan in Miami), fluency in Spanish and Portuguese, and an MA in Latin American politics and economics be enough to crack it? Prior to marrying my wife, I had no ties to Florida at all, but we'd really like to settle down there, and I've been massively interested at doing some kind of work with/in Latin America for years, and have a CV that demonstrates at least that interest.
Thanks for anyone who can give some insight.
