1L Summer Associate position
I'm a 0L, but I want to make sure I do things right so I'm asking this now
How do you get a 1L SA position?
Which New York firms accept 1Ls?
I'm gunning for biglaw

Indeed it is. This thread has been moved to the appropriate forum.rad lulz wrote:

The search option is also credited. The main ways that I know of:
1. Diversity 1L SA's (but even these are competitive).
2. Go to a top school and have strong ties to a small market (e.g. NU to Ohio).
3. Get lucky.
4. The South/TX? Rad and others probably know more than I do but I hear 1L SA's are more common in those regions.
Plenty of people with top grades at top schools don't get 1L SA's. My main advice: just accept that you're not going to get a 1L SA and concentrate on putting yourself in the best position for 2L OCI.

To add to the conversation about southern hiring:
Texas firms hire a fair amount of 1Ls. UT students who actually had 1L gigs would be able to speak more about who got these jobs, but, from my more limited knowledge, I know a fair amount of UT students got them (not exactly a large amount, but enough to say that 1L hiring wasn't exactly rare among the people I know) and I know a few T14 people with TX ties that landed 1L spots.

How about HYS students? Does anyone know if they typically can land a 1L SA position? If all three aren't equals for this, feel free to specify. TYIA

When you've been dating the same chick for three years, even weekend nights are boring. And haha, no parietals end at 2 pm on Friday nights. I'm impressed with the knowledge.rad lulz wrote:Aren't you a junior? Shouldn't you be hitting on some chicks right now? Or is it after parietals yet?bernaldiaz wrote:How about HYS students? And soj, sorry, wasn't trying to gun, just curious.

Re: 1L Summer Associate position
I had multiple offers in multiple cities with good but not great grades at a T14. I am a URM with w/e but I know other URMs that didn't get any offers.
My general advice is this:
1. Prepare early and mass mail everywhere on December 1st. I started preparing my resumes and cover letters the summer before law school. I read a ton of TLS threads and PMed some of the more seasoned posters on here for advice (pretty much anything thesealocust says is gold) on my cover letter and resume.
2. Cast your net wide. I targeted two major and one secondary market and somewhere around 100 firms total.
3. Follow-up with everyone. If anyone emails you back, even with negative news, follow up with them. I got an interview by replying to a rejection email from a recruiter. She emailed me back and said that her email was automated and she had overlooked how qualified I was.
4. Don't listen to CDO. Evey meeting I had with my CDO left me more confused than before I went in. They basically try and fit everyone into categories and give general advice.
5. Prepare for interviews. Do practice interviews and research for every firm that offers you an interview. I did a ton of research on the firms that I got phone and callback interviews from.
I have a ton of other advice to. Maybe I will make a thread about my experience with 1L hiring after finals are over.

Can you walk into one? No. If you have decent grades and start searching aggressively from 12/1? Chances aren't that bad, ancedotally...bernaldiaz wrote:How about HYS students?
