Re: Columbia 1L(s) taking questions
Honestly I think it balances out to 3.3ish because while there are more B's than any other grade, the added weight of A and A- compensates. So like, there may be only 20-25% of the class getting an A/A- and 40% getting a B, but the A's bring up people's gpa's more than the B's lower them. idk. profs are also giving out less and less B-'s which brings people's averages up a little bit.Sirius Blackstone wrote:I've heard the median is below 3.3, somewhere between 3.2-3.3. I would have a hard time believing it's above 3.3 because something like 35-45% of each class gets a B.jbagelboy wrote: No one can tell you with complete certainty, but if you run a basic regression with the stone data pt at ~top 35% and 3.3 as median, 3.5 falls around top quarter and 3.6 around top 15%. Then again, stone could be as high as top 40% or as low as top 28%, which would change these values.
Stone honors for the 1L class is much closer to top 30% than 40%, but like jbagel said its all a mystery.
this is also assuming all types of grades are evenly distributed amongst all students, which isn't necessarily true.

Re: Columbia 1L(s) taking questions
I live on 115th, and each building on that block has a superintendent, or "super." There may be regulations regarding whether or not you can move furniture out, but I got on good terms with mine and he let me play around with the furniture. You'll meet yours the day you move in, if your building has one.jdapplicant wrote:Thanks again everyone for being so great about responding to questions.
How do we go about asking for them to store furniture if we got stuck with a furnished apartment? Ideally I'd like to go up first and see what furniture is okay and what I'd like to get rid of, at least in my own room, before asking them to store something for me. Also, who would we ask? I think I remember someone mentioning a Super (if that's a thing?).
Also, in regards to maintaining housing assignments, do we have to do anything after paying our housing deposit and before our move-in appointment?
I don't think you need to do anything in between. Can always contact your roommates and figure out what they're bringing/just talk a bit, though.

I signed up for couple's housing but uhmmm... I am no longer 1/2 of a couple. Does anyone know if they're going to reassign me if I contact them? What if I just casually showed up on the day I am supposed to sign my lease/move in? I would honestly prefer to keep my apartment and just pay the rent...

Re: Columbia 1L(s) taking questions
Sorry to hear about your relationship. You're probably paying minimum $2000 for a couples 1BDR. I would highly recommend switching for that reason alone - it will add another $8000 to your loan tab each year than necessary. But moreover, you will have to show paperwork that you are in a couple (marriage license, active joint bank acct, ect) and get a signature from the significant other when you go to the housing office in August to sign your lease and get your keys.bitcheslovecake wrote:I signed up for couple's housing but uhmmm... Then again, I know if one person in the couple leaves part-way through the year, they won't kick you out. Maybe there's some flexibility, but I'm pretty certain you will have to show you are at least a couple at move-in to get the room.
I would call juliana utley ASAP and explain the circumstances.

Haha, oh, GGB. And I don't know, perhaps some people had LPs and were freaking out? Heck, even I would have emailed about an LP, however correct he would have been to give me one.jbagelboy wrote:Do you know what that email was about the other day with "grade changes"? It's an ungraded course, what grade changes could he have to make?? Lol. I didn't email him but I guess others did.lunaraeon wrote: If he was going to give anyone a LP, it would have been me.
And fyi it would not be you: you showed up.. There were two people who actually just came like twice all semester lol

Anyone take or know anything about Evidence with Schechtman? I see it's a T/F, multiple choice exam. Decent bet it's closed book?

Anybody know about "C Law and Finance Theories" with Pistor, or alternatively, Deals with Gilson? Thank you!
Also, any insight into which classes you'd need to rank first to get (I'm assuming Jackson's Corporations class will, but outside that?)?

I think Schectman is open book and Richman is closed book for Evidence exams.MCFC wrote:Anyone take or know anything about Evidence with Schechtman? I see it's a T/F, multiple choice exam. Decent bet it's closed book?

All grades are in - if we were to qualify for one of the honors designations, where would that show up? I don't see it on the transcript.

Re: Columbia 1L(s) taking questions
If you look through last year's EIP thread, people posted when they had been added to transcripts. Can't recall how long that took after grades came out, but it looked like it wasn't immediate.jbagelboy wrote:All grades are in - if we were to qualify for one of the honors designations, where would that show up? EDIT: Last year someone posted on June 29th saying that Stone designations were up on Lawnet. And, fwiw, the next poster said,
Just FYI because this confused me: I don't think honors show up when you just click "Check Grades." I was only able to see it when I selected "Print JD Program Transcript."

CivPro for sure, but after that it depends. You can go here to look at the 1L Foundation courses (CivPro, Ks, Torts, ConLaw, Property, Crim). I think most of our class did CivPro, Contracts, Torts last Fall. But some people took ConLaw in the Fall and Contracts or Torts in the spring.Humbert Humbert wrote:Thanks. Question for all you awesome 2Ls and 3Ls: Do you recommend purchasing a nice tailored suit now, or wait? I have the money in my accout to pull the trigger now ($700ish). On those same lines, any reputable tailors and dry cleaners in the area?

I'm pretty sure everyone had Torts. It was just K's that shifted; one section had property in the fall, another had con law.MCFC wrote:CivPro for sure, but after that it depends. but yea, as MCFC said, you don't really know which 3 it will be from year to year, section to section

Re: Columbia 1L(s) taking questions
Based on the course calendar, you for sure have civil procedure in the fall. But con law, property, contracts, torts all have sections in the fall and spring. Contracts and torts are heavily weighted to the winter (though you'd be lucky to have the one torts section in the winter, it's with Huang), property is heavily weighted to the fall, con law is split. And crim is only in the spring.jbagelboy wrote:I'm pretty sure everyone had Torts. I'd buy it now, if you don't plan to change your size any time soon You'll have use for it throughout the year, and it's good to have something you're comfortable in. You'll likely wear it for your 1L job, too, and I hated having to make a mad rush to find a suit during write-on. But you could also hold off until winter break if you have a suit already that you're happy wearing for school and firm events.mylifeis24 wrote:Question for all you awesome 2Ls and 3Ls: Do you recommend purchasing a nice tailored suit now, or wait? Yeah, I have 3 relatively cheap suits that I've worn for other jobs before- nothing fancy but with a bit of altering to refit my shape they should be fine. I think waiting until winter break is probably a good idea. I've googled some tailors in NY and one reputable one offers free readjustements if your size changes. http://www.yelp.com/biz/alterations-mas ... p-new-yorklunaraeon wrote:I'd buy it now, if you don't plan to change your size any time soon You'll have use for it throughout the year, and it's good to have something you're comfortable in. Yeah that's not always true. While that was my setup, some of my friends had property first semester and contracts second. I think crim and torts might have also been switched too for some people.BigLaw_Lit wrote:http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/ ... riculum/1l
