Re: LSU Law 1L Taking Questions
How are job prospects this year? How much does the Napoleonic Law thing come up? Is it a detriment to job seeking efforts out of state? How corrupt is Louisiana really and does the level of corruption make lawyering more our less fun? Is it hard to network in the major markets from Baton Rouge? Are LSU grads able to get to Houston?

How are job prospects this year?
Relatively Excellent and I don't use that word lightly. The legal market in any state is indicative of the economic health of that state. Louisiana is at the top of the mark as far as how an economy should stabilize itself in a nationally depressed economy.
I cannot stress this enough, LSU is ranked 75 but it is considered the top law school in the state. Yes Tulane is a great law school and ranked higher but LSU has a higher bar passage rating, has an incredibly higher employment after graduation rate in Louisiana, and is well respected in the state by virtually every LSU alumni. (All at the 1/2 of the tuition cost of Tulane)
Rank is an important factor but one must consider in state competition in the job market when selecting a school, after all aren't we all in this to get a job?
A school like Fordham Law, NY may be ranked highly but considering the schools grads have to compete with NYU, Columbia and virtually every Ivy the looks considerably less attractive.
In this case LSU has a nice spot at the top and the big New Orleans firms, Mobile, and Houston firms take notice.
How much does the Napoleonic Law thing come up?
We have one legal traditions class first semester and LA obligations second semester. After that you can choose how much you want to learn about civil law. There's a reason LSU gives you a JD in common law and a DCL in civil law. You'll be able to practice anywhere with a degree from LSU.
Is it a detriment to job seeking efforts out of state?
It depends what kind of work you want to get into. Generally I would say no but if you're not planning on staying in the Southeast it's an uphill battle.
How corrupt is Louisiana really and does the level of corruption make lawyering more our less fun?
I'm beginning to think the law game isn't for you.
Is it hard to network in the major markets from Baton Rouge?
No, BR is very open to transplants. It's far more open then New Orleans. It's a very friendly place and the firms are far more relaxed here.
Are LSU grads able to get to Houston?
Yes, I'd say about 15% end up in Houston.
