UC Hastings 1L Taking Questions
Hello!
I'm a UC Hastings 1L taking questions. Feel free to ask whatever you can think of. I'll try to answer your question to the best of my ability. There are also some other people on TLS who are currently 1L's at Hastings so they might also chime in too.
Good luck in your application cycle.

Re: UC Hastings 1L Taking Questions
Sorry, I'm a 1L. The current first year students at Hastings are all concerned with summer employment.frotteur wrote:What's the job market looking like for you guys?
On that topic, it's looking really good. The walk from Hastings' student hotel and law school is literally a 5 minute walk from almost every level of gov't in the state (district and appellate federal courts + superior, appellate, and supreme court for CA). Since all of the courthouses are here all of the federal/state and NGO's are here as well.
On Feb. 4th there will be a "Public Interest/Public Sector" day where ~50 employers come to Hastings to interview for 1L/2L summer employment. Summer externships are located in the federal and state buildings next to Hastings. As long as you have a decent rank you shouldn't have a problem finding a summer job. (employers from other regions come to the job fair also).
However, competition is still tough. I'll be able to answer questions about summer jobs better after I've landed one.

I'm guessing you want more information about actual careers? I don't know any more than you. During orientation there were a surprising # of alums who were still unemployed. If you talk to a 2L or 3L they will be able to help you more than I can (and they're some on TLS if you look around.)

How do you like it out there? I hadn't given Hastings any consideration until late but my brother and his family recently moved out to SF and now I've been looking into the school a lot more recently. How is the IP law focus there, being so close to silicon valley?

I know there is a gym somewhere at Hastings. What about locker rooms and showers. Do you know where they are? Is there also some kind of monthly fee you have to pay to use the facilities?
I've determined that working out will be my main tool of maintaining sanity through the semester, so answers would really help. Thanks

It's in the tower. There are lockers for $25/yr. But your free school locker is on the same block. Everything else is free. I'm really going to miss the tower gym. There was rarely more than 10 people in it at a time and it's got just about everything you need.nagelbett wrote:I know there is a gym somewhere at Hastings. What about locker rooms and showers. I love the Tower's gym. Sorry, no showers but if you live in the Tower then you have a shower in your apartment. It's free to use for everyone who lives in the Tower. I also know people who use it that don't live in the Tower but go to the school -- no one cares.hiima3L wrote:It's in the tower. There are lockers for $25/yr. The gym has almost everything you could want. It has free weights up to 70 or 80 pounds, plenty of benches (not the best, but good enough), weight machines for almost everything (once again, good enough), a punching bag, 3 treadmills, and roughly a dozen other cardio machines. If you are a super fitness freak, and need very specific machines, then the Tower's gym is probably not going to work. Otherwise it's an amazing marriage of convenience and quality.
Working out is a great way to reduce stress and take your mind off of classes.

Re: UC Hastings 1L Taking Questions
This thread is essentially closed. A handful of current 2/3L Hastings students will answer all questions here:

I am transferring out of Hastings but will still be available to take questions. Hastings was a great experience and I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.

Re: UC Hastings 1L Taking Questions
Hey,
I'm a 1L at GW and my torts professor - Diamond, is a visiting prof from Hastings. I'm working on my outline though I wish I had a supplement outline for backup and to keep in check. I'm wondering if Hastings has an open outline bank that anyone can access? I tried basic Google searching which led me to a Hastings outline-bank page but it required downloading or purchasing software or programs that I have no interest in time in… Let me know! Thanks.

PM me with your school e-mail address, and I can forward you a Fall 2002 Diamond Torts outline.
Congrats on having Diamond. I've heard he's a good professor to take Torts with.
