Re: 1L U. Houston Law Student taking questions
1. Might be a general law question about practicing in Texas, but is there a market for working with labor unions? If so, does UH do a good job in employment/labor law?
2. What is student life at UH? Are people active in clubs? Any law school sponsored tailgating, golf outings etc...?
3. I know the campus is in the bad part of town, but what are the facilities like? Inside the building is it dated? Should I set my standards low so when I visit I do not get disappointed?
4. Are the Calhoun Lofts a ripoff? They look nice and I would prefer to live close to campus my first year.
5. How much does UH care about moot court? Will they care that I did it in undergrad and is it hard to make a traveling team?

1. I don't really know about working. We aren't allowed to talk to career services until December.UNTravis wrote:1. Might be a general law question about practicing in Texas, but is there a market for working with labor unions? If so, does UH do a good job in employment/labor law?

2. Student life is surprisingly very good. People are active and there are tons of activities. Everyone seems pretty cool for the most part.
3. Facilities are really dated but truthfully law school is a rat race and it's like taking a crap either on a clean toilet or on a golden toilet. UH is actually not that bad but the area surrounding it is very ghetto.
4. C Lofts are a HUGE rip off. Sorry for people living there. It is true - apartments in Houston HAVE gone up significantly in the last 2-3 years but Calhoun Lofts is a huge rip.
5. I'm not too sure about moot court but the moot court tells us they are really important. There's a pretty nice trophy case with moot court stuff.
Overall, UH is a lot better than I expected. A lot better than UH undergrad. The competition is stiff though and I think costs may go up so...I think weigh accordingly.

Do you think Houston leans one way or the other politically? A few friends are concerned that my application might be "too much on the left," which I think is a bit silly, but I figured I'd ask the question nonetheless.

what places do most law students live that are relatively cheap and not too ghetto (preferably, i'm well armed enough coming from the country where the third ward wouldn't be a deal breaker)

How would you compare your job prospects so far to what you know of similarly ranked students at the other Texas schools (mainly UT, Baylor, and SMU), if you know?

I'm sitting outside top quarter with two solid grades, an okay grade, and a crappy grade. I'm employed for the summer but I basically begged the firm I worked for during college as a legal assistant. I didn't get shit from OCI but there are two people - the gunners of our section - who have dressed up twice. I know a girl from last semester who was in the top 5% and got a 1L SA to Baker Botts Houston w/ the stipulation that if they liked her, she would have to work for them 2L summer.Flappy Scribbleneck wrote:How was OCI? A ton of people in my section already are bitching about how shitty the legal market is and sounding a lot like MTal. We weren't sounding like this during orientation...
Houston apartment costs have skyrocketed some. I think a really good bet would be to try and rent from an owner. Lurie Apartments (owned by a guy named Lurie) are really, really cheap for what it is but they get scooped up really really quickly. No matter what you do, do not use Google or one of those search agents. The apartments that pop up are ones that pay a ton to pop up and the costs go directly into your rent.TxRenegade2012 wrote:what places do most law students live that are relatively cheap and not too ghetto (preferably, i'm well armed enough coming from the country where the third ward wouldn't be a deal breaker)
Drive around down W Alabama, Montrose, Richmond (if you are ballsy). I would just not recommend living in 3rd ward. It is noisy enough where I live.
Hm...I don't know. I know one person who went to SMU and two people who went to UT. All of them ended up around median and they don't seem to have anything lined up yet...eaper wrote:How would you compare your job prospects so far to what you know of similarly ranked students at the other Texas schools (mainly UT, Baylor, and SMU), if you know?

Re: 1L U. Houston Law Student taking questions
Thought I'd necro this thread and see if any other (now) 2Ls are poking around here. We're all about to get our sections, and I'd like to ask a little more about the profs I've been assigned (Vetter, Bruhl).
