Almost every night of Orientation involves some sort of bar/drinking event. I never went to the UN visit/scavenger hunt (it's 90+ degrees out in New York City this summer, the last thing I want to be doing is hauling my ass around), but met hundreds of my future friends and classmates at places like the Pourhouse and O'Connell's.*

* You will eventually come to realize that these places suck, but as part of your hazing, you're on your own to find the cool bars in Morningside.
Hazing already? I approve. At least tell them to go to HH at the Heights for 4 dollar lethal margaritas and food with arbitrary carrots.

I also recommend the fishbowl at Pour House.
THE HEIGHTS IS NOT COOL. I don't care how many times you and I go there each week.
your lies can't stop the proliferation of noobs.

Are there elevators, ac, laundry rooms, etc?
There are elevators. Not sure about laundry, but there's no central AC. Honestly, I think only Lenfest (maybe Lionsgate) has central AC - it's definitely a luxury in New York City. Bring a unit.
There are elevators and laundry in the basement. You'll get a card thing to put money on to use the washers and dryers from your super when you move in. No central AC but you can get a window unit from Clinton's (the super will recommend this to you) and I think it was around $150 for the unit and $50 for installation. And I HIGHLY recommend it.

Last year we got them on August 14th. 2 pass/fail? You mean LPW and Legal Methods? LPW lasts into November. But after LM is over, you'll generally have classes from 10:40-12 3 times a week, and 2 afternoon classes. Or you could have 2 in the morning and one in the afternoon. There aren't classes scheduled between 12 and 1, and LPW meets at super difft times (including some sections on Friday morning and some in the evening).

Thanks!

How likely are we to have Friday classes our first semester? If we do, are they usually later in the day? Also, when can we expect our loans to be disbursed and refunded so we can pay for books, rent, etc?

I have never had Friday classes. i really hope I don't break that trend now! And a CLS student earlier in this thread that loans are dispersed around Aug 19th and deposited a few days later.

You only chance of having a Friday class is if your legal research and writing section meets on Friday and the professor is unable to/refuses to move the class to another date. The time of day varies depending on the section. Most people didn't have Friday class, though.

Here's a really broad question I hope you won't mind answering: what's unique about Columbia? What kind of programs and practices does the school have that helps distinguish it from peer schools like NYU or Chicago, or even Harvard?

How many hours do you think a 1L student spends for studying and for socializing? (months preceding exam week)
(also provided that the student in question is aiming for at least top 20%)
