Are there law students in the frats at UVA? A third year at my firm insists it's doable but I have my doubt.

I'm guessing you aren't a UVA student or you'd know that the law school is basically one big frat (or 36 frats for each section including the 2L and 3L former sections, however you want to picture it). I don't know why you would need (or want) to be in a frat as a law student.

I'm practicing. But just curious.

I'm guessing it's possible since most frats in general don't restrict membership to undergraduates. I know my undergrad's fraternities allowed grad students to rush (but again, why would they?), and some of those fraternities are present at UVA with the same rules governing them.

anecdotally i know of several law students that joined undergrad organizations with greek letters, but none that i would call a frat.

i never heard of a grad student joining an IFC house when i was in undergrad here. that would have been weird.

This. Closest thing I can think of would be the Jefferson or Raven Societies, which pull members from various schools of the University and have Greek letters associated with them (not sure about Ravens on that point). But these are decidedly not frats.

would be bizarre, for the reason everyone has said--what possible motivation to join a frat exists for someone who can legally buy alcohol?

Mahoney's lectures are pretty outlined and she doesn't go on tangents. I think most people just took notes in class and supplemented from an SBA outline as needed. Some people used Gilberts too, though I didn't so I can't vouch for that.

Yes? Not sure what you're getting at. RA's get paid. Me and a friend of mine got paid-by-the-hour ones at small firms in our hometowns. Some lucky folks got 1L SAs.

But it doesn't really matter, outside of the fact that getting money is nice, so long as you're doing something legal.

I sent out apps to about 150 offices in NY, DC, LA and SF on or just after December 1. I think I got two or three rejection letters, otherwise total radio silence. Total waste of postage. Granted, this was in 2011, but I don't think anything has materially changed since.

If you are from Texas, it's worth it to apply to Texas law firms for a 1L SA.

Current 3L here. There were several non-URM, non-IP people our year who had 1L firm jobs in DC, NY, and LA. And it seemed like there were a significant number in smaller southern and midwestern markets. Quite a few in Texas

If you're from a smaller market and do well, you have a shot. If you are targeting DC / NY / LA or whatever and do exceptionally well, you also have a shot.

In other words, it's not a waste of time to send all those mass mailings out (even later than December 1.... get on it)

Added perk of applying for 1L SA (especially in markets you may not have ties to) is that come OGI you can talk about how you applied to their firm last summer. The benefit of this is the same though even if you apply, say, in January after you take a few days off after exam to relax.

Nice catch, forgot that the Southern firms still hire 1Ls. Major market 1L SAs are still super rare though.
