Is work experience a huge factor in obtaining summer internships? What constitutes beneficial work experience?

I'm asking these questions based on the advice posted to the UVA Law Blog (LinkRemoved) which seemed to stress the importance of work experience.

It wasn't in the past. It is now. Firm experience seems to be nice. IP experience seems much nicer.

So working at an investment house is decent or not relevant?

Does it make sense to accept the full award of $$ and loans totaling at $67.7k?

I figured it best to take everything and if I don't use it just let it roll over to the next year and take less as a 2L.

Thanks for bringing up that idea...it certianly sounds like it would be worth thinking about.

If you ask for too little to begin with, you can always take more. It doesn't make sense to take out the full award and hold it over for the next year unless you think you will need the full award. Otherwise, you're just accruing unnecessary interest on anything that is unsubsidized.

Interesting take. So you can ask for the full amount at any point throughout the year if you need more?

The tuition is going to increase, no? Does anyone know when the new tuition figures will be out? I think that is what decides how much we are going to need.

My understanding from finaid is that the tuition increase was built into their estimated COA.

I just called finaid and they said you can ask for more at any point during the year and the current turnaround time is ~3weeks but will likely be much faster next year when the school becomes the direct lender.

Still would appreciate some feedback about COL estimates by semester from current students.

That was my impression as well, I just wonder what the breakdown of the 67,700 is. Like 45,000 tuition 22,700 living+books. Or 47,000 tuition etc, etc.

Sounds good. I'm on me parents insurance as I just recently graduated. I think it's going to lapse for two months of the summer but I'll be put back on it as soon as I get my schedule for fall semester at UVA.

Moving to Cville first weekend in August. Orientation isn't until Aug 16 and I'm assuming that's when we'll get our student IDs. Will I be able to use the university gyms between Aug 6-Aug16 w/o an ID?

After reading http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 0&start=50 ("The Super Helpful Little Things"), I hear having a huge desk is a big plus. I personally like big desks anyways; I just don't wanna shell $400+ on one. Anyone know any good places to get some good deals on desks? I don't care what it looks like; I'd be even happy making a door desk (I think Home Depot usually has desks for very cheap, but doesn't seem like there is one in C'Ville)...

It really doesn't matter. I have it as abc123@virginia.edu on my resume, but I guess I could use my name if need be. Employers won't give two shits as long as it's not Hot_Gurl_Slayer_von_Weedsmoker@pimpmyemail.com or something.

Not cool putting my email out there like that.
