There's variance from year to year. I had this happen to me as well in at least one class. Can't say how strict the administration really gets on 1L classes but by and large tenured professors do what they damn well please with grades within certain limits (according to several of said professors I have known), so I'd expect to see some variance coming from that though I wouldn't attribute it to the administrationWhiskeyAndCupcakes wrote:Got my first grade back. It's a class where spreadsheets reflecting old curves show the prof tends to have a generous curve. This year, the curve was less generous and reflected the Georgetown curve almost exactly.
Just wondering: has this happened in other classes where you all are getting grades back? I'm trying to figure out if the exams in this class just weren't as strong as usual or if the administration is cracking down more on professors' grading curves and making them grade on the Georgetown curve. If it's the latter, then that sucks.

Also this is weirdly hostile and misses the point that the difference between A and A- (and A- and B+) often involves subjective determinations by the prof and is not reflective of effort or comprehension by the studentusn26 wrote:No grades yet for me but I, for one, want nothing to do with a school where getting an A reflects some amount of effort or ability, and will not stand for it.WhiskeyAndCupcakes wrote:Got my first grade back. I think there's a difference between an A and a B- paper that reflects effort and/or ability. But I still am in favor of just giving everyone A's for successfully continuing to be alive at the end of the exam.Capitol_Idea wrote:Also this is weirdly hostile and misses the point that the difference between A and A- (and A- and B+) often involves subjective determinations by the prof and is not reflective of effort or comprehension by the student
ETA: I just really want to blow off law school and still get a decent GPA, ok?

All right, all right. Mea Culpa.WhiskeyAndCupcakes wrote:We're IRL friends and USN was just teasing me (and, moreso himself, as he's signed up for at least a couple classes known to have generous curves). Generally though I feel inside jokes are what the Lounge is for. Reserve this for the SUPER SERIOUS questions like where to go drinking around GULC
Speaking of which I don't recall seeing you in there as much, Gray. what the hell

Look if I was really stalking I'd have known you were still dropping posts in the Lounge just outside my normal purview. Also I think BigLaw is re-conditioning me to just start doing research instead of expecting someone else to answer my questions.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
What would people advise to be the best housing for 1L?
Somewhere close to Georgetown, lively/ with bars and stuff preferably.
And what's the best way to find a fellow 1L roommate?
Is the dorming/housing provided by GULC good? I'm thinking maybe do on-campus housing 1L, and then while there decide where I would want to live for 2L.
Also it sounds great how on campus is connected to the fitness center as well.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I didn't do it, but a lot of people really liked living on Campus 1L year. Maybe it was the closeness, maybe the commiseration, I don't know. I personally liked having the escape. I could go study in the Library if I wanted to, but having a place alone, away from school, was great when I needed to escape the stressed masses. I lived in the NOMA area, and while there aren't exactly a plethora of bars, it's close enough to be convenient, close enough to H Street to go out plenty, and is pretty up and coming.Thelaw23 wrote:What would people advise to be the best housing for 1L?

I lived alone/with my girlfriend, so no advice to offer on roommates.

Any current (or former!) students with kids? I could use some information on good schools and places to live with kids. We would love to live close to GULC or at least easily metro-accessible, but at this point a good school district is probably #1. Thanks!

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
It's hard to come up with a definition of "good" that Gewirz would meet, particularly in terms of niceness of the apartments relative to their cost (IIRC only the crappiest/smallest one or two of the 13 or so options even fit within the housing budget). But I would choose Gewirz again every time though because it's just sooooo convenient to school and the gym.EzraFitz wrote:I didn't do it, but a lot of people really liked living on Campus 1L year. If money is no object then there are tons of fantastic places to live in DC that are convenient to GULC and have great private school/daycare options.govlife wrote:Any current (or former!) students with kids? If you are not richer than God, then may I suggest Arlington/Fairfax suburbs, Takoma Park/Silver Spring, or Potomac/Rockville where you only need ~$200K household income to have sufficient housing space in a good neighborhood with well regarded schools.
I lived in Germantown while commuting over an hour and had 3 kids during law school and survived. Any of the above options would present a shorter commute (15-45 minutes by metro)

I live in Gewirz. I think it's a little pricey for what you're getting (which isn't much), but I would recommend living here 1L. You'll make a lot of friends, and will save a lot of time commuting to school.Thelaw23 wrote:What would people advise to be the best housing for 1L?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I think the making friends thing is a big part of Gewirz for sure. I did not know anyone coming in, and was not the most social, but did struggle to find a solid group of friends. I think living off campus was part of that (and the other part was me not being social. Really kids, be social).

Does everyone who applies get Gerwiz? Or there's a lottery or something?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
There are X number of spots in Gewirz and if <X 1Ls apply all 1Ls will get a space and there will be a lottery among upperclass/LLMs for the rest. I believe all 1Ls have gotten a space in recent memory, but if not then it was an overwhelming majority (>90%). Theoretically you might miss out but it's quite unlikely.Thelaw23 wrote:Does everyone who applies get Gerwiz? Or there's a lottery or something?

There are some particulars WRT what *type* of room you might get or how things work out with people withdrawing (people don't have to commit until late), but I don't really remember those quite well and the above remains accurate.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
You'll get a spot for sure. Initially I had a two bedroom all to myself, but my roomate moved in a week after classes started (last minute add on) and he told me there were a couple rooms he could have picked from. So even now there must be spots open.Thelaw23 wrote:Does everyone who applies get Gerwiz? Or there's a lottery or something?
