If I am getting a laptop for law school is there any advantage on campus to have a PC vs MAC? I do not mean to start a general debate over the merit of each but simply if programs needed for class are supported for each. I have heard of some people having trouble with MAC at some schools.

you don't have to use test software at UVA, so that's not a concern

you have to use it for the bar exam, but (and somebody correct me if i'm wrong) i don't think there are many issues with the test software anymore, at least any that are endemic to one OS

I am looking to rent a house where my wife can raise chickens and maybe bees. Hopefully not super far from the law school. Does anybody have any ideas of areas to look in or perhaps some ideas on where I could find some information? I have never been to C-Ville and as a result I am not to familiar with the different areas.
I am having a hard time with this so any advice or information would be super helpful.

No joke, check Craigslist. When I was looking, there were a bunch of farmhouses and such for rent about 15 to 25 minutes away from the school. I ended up on Arlington and never actually checked out any of the places, but they're out there and seemed pretty cool/affordable.

Has anyone ever heard of anyone taking the exam home and doing it there? Is this not allowed? I heard someone talking about doing that, but just assumed there was a rule against it.

Also, why in the world waste the time it takes to get home when thats time you could be typing?

A bit late, but I had an exam that was a combination of take-home and in-school sections. We were just told to copy the take-home section into our exam. The take-home section had a word limit, but not a time limit.

Even if Pavilion had "replaced Ivy socially", Ivy is like a 5-10 min walk to the Pavilion. There is no need to spend 1.5-2x the price to save on that walk if that is your criteria.

Expect to get an email like this, titled FALL GRADES, early in January. Please note that this email won't have your grades, although your heart will begin to pound even knowing this ahead of time. This was from last year.

Just a short e-mail to update you on the fall grading calendar and procedures.

All first-year grades are due in the Student Records Office no later than Monday, January 21st. All upper-level fall grades are due no later than Friday, February 1st. NOTE: If an instructor has more than 175 exams to grade, s/he must submit one set of grades by January 21st (first-year course) or February 1st (upper-level course) and all remaining grades by February 15th.

The Student Records Office processes grades as received and, typically, grades are posted on SIS within 2-3 working days after grades are received. You can monitor this process on SIS by accessing your student center and using either the “grades” or “unofficial transcript” option in the “academics” drop-down box.

FYI – course evaluations are released once grades have been posted to transcripts.

It seems like they have made an effort to have 1L grades released more quickly. This was not the case in my day, and I got 3 of mine either 1/31 or 2/1. Some professors are super strivers and get them in early, although I can't believe there are some in before New Years, which is crazy. However, the vast majority will come around the deadline for you. But you'll likely have 1 or 2 in the days leading up to the deadline, unless you get unlucky.

That language about grades taking 2-3 days to process after being received is nonsense, I think. If that were actually the case, the vast majority of grades would come 2-3 days after the deadline instead of the day of the deadline, which is what happens normally. Sometimes you will get 1 a day or two after the deadline.

Question about UVA culture.

So, to my surprise, I was admitted yesterday. I'm a veteran and was previously planning to go to W&M in the hopes of reentering the military as a JAG officer. UVA was a huge reach for me, so I was pleasantly surprised. UVA for free (GI Bill) is hard to pass up.

My wife is still active duty and is stationed on the east side of Virginia, about 2 hours from Charlottesville. We've discussed the possibility of me just renting a studio apartment crash pad in Charlottesville, and then coming home on the weekends/whenever possible.

I know some people describe UVA as having a "fratty" drinking and softball culture. Are people who sort of opt out of this social pariahs? I'm going to be 30 when I start school, and as a married guy, I'd much rather spend my weekends with my wife as opposed to softball leagues and doing shots in bars. I'm not judging or opposed to that (I was there once myself), but I don't see myself really diving in to that aspect of the school. However, I also don't want to be seen as the class weirdo or curmudgeon. I'm pretty social and friendly, and would happily get a beer with someone on a Tuesday night, but my weekends would almost exclusively be spent away from Charlottesville.

Not every event was a late night bar night on the corner, I had friends who were in a very different social scene (married / non-drinking / whatever) and never got the impression that they were (or felt) outcast or viewed differently for it.
