Does Penn split the incoming class into sections? If so, how big on average are these sections?

How about the cost of living? About how much would one expect to pay monthly for a 1 bedroom apartment?

Re: Penn Students Taking Questions
COL depends on your frame of reference. 1 bedroom prices varry widely in grad dorms they about 12-1300, off campus ranges from 1200-Obscene, if you are willing to live a bit further they can be had for 1000 or less, studios are slightly less at all price points.Tiva wrote:Thanks,Veyron wrote:Yes, 80 people, further devided into cohorts of about 15.Tiva wrote:Does Penn split the incoming class into sections? Re: Penn Students Taking Questions
You can find 1 bedrooms for 700 or so if you want to keep a car and live 10-15 minutes away. Actually you can also take train/trolley/bus for $80-100 a month, and the apartments are generally bigger than what you find in the city.Veyron wrote:

I recall reading that 1Ls take 6 core classes, 2 electives, and LRW. How is this broken down across semesters? Also, is LRW graded?

Re: Penn Students Taking Questions
about 50 people get on law review every year. that's about 20% of the class. but, not 100% of the class participates in the journal competition. a small number of people opt out or only participate in JLASC's (journal of law and social change) write on process, which is separate.

example/link of an 'obscene' place that people ACTUALLY live in near campus?

Re: Penn Students Taking Questions
I guess the better question is:
of the buildings profiled on penn's website, is there a ranking/rating of them somewhere?

Those communities are grossly over priced. Actually anything over $1100 in Philly is grossly over priced.

Re: Penn Students Taking Questions
i know some people really like the wellington.
domus is seriously overpriced - i don't know anyone who's lived there more than one year. left bank is close to school but also kind of overpriced. it advertises itself as a luxury building and it actually has a really nice in-building gym, but it's not ***that*** great and kind of in a sketchy area considering how much you're paying.
a few other popular buildings are the rittenhouse claridge (good location), 2400 chestnut (still in center city, but a pretty close walk to school), and the sterling (i don't really know why people live here because the location sucks and it's not nice, lol).
but i would agree with r6_philly that a lot of the doormen buildings are grossly overpriced. however, it's nice to be able to have a front desk to receive packages. up to you to decide if that's worth paying a lot extra. personally, i don't live in a doorman building.

Also, you might be surprised even as a philly native but if you want to live within walking distance of the LS in a decent building be prepared to pay out the ASS.

also, somewhere gapsa (the grad student organization) has a tenant survey that gives opinions on all kinds of landlords and apartment buildings. it shouldn't be hard to find on the penn housing website

Well since the bridge is going to be open back up again on 11/6, you can live in graduate hospital area once again and pay much less.Veyron wrote:And yet, people live there, fancy that.r6_philly wrote:Those communities are grossly over priced. there are a lot of people at penn with varying budget constraints. some of us don't have parents to support us, some of us don't want to borrow more money than we need to...and some of us DO. that's fine either way. but to imply that $1100 isn't overpriced in philly is inaccurate, because it definitely is. you can certainly live in center city for less than that -- maybe not *much* less, but definitely for 1000 or so. you can also live in west philly for substantially less than that. and even those people who pay $1100 may live in walking distance.. but that could be 25-30 minutes.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
