You'll also probably get some tone-deaf comment from a professor like Rosa Brooks along the lines of "Don't worry about grades, you're all going to get jobs."

Step one would probably be narrowing down your location and what kind of job you're interested inAnonnonnon wrote:Looking to send out my resume to judges/employers for internships/jobs for 1L summer, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. any advice?
If it's firm work step 2 is sending about 100 applications three weeks ago

I'd like to stay in DC if possible. I'm also not locked into working in a firm for 1L. I just want some more experience in the field, like potentially working for a judgebuckiguy_sucks wrote:Step one would probably be narrowing down your location and what kind of job you're interested inAnonnonnon wrote:Looking to send out my resume to judges/employers for internships/jobs for 1L summer, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. any advice?

Lots of DC stuff can ben found on symplicity. Otherwise just plain old google every judge in the district and blast out some applications. I didn't apply to clerkships but there's tons of federal agencies, and most of them hire interns. Just start googling that shit tooAnonnonnon wrote:I'd like to stay in DC if possible. Hey guys, I just wanted to ask you how the whole large class size affects you?
I know there is a lot of flame on GULC's employment statistics and opportunities. Do you think there is a lot of truth to that? How well does it feed into the NY market, which is where I plan on working after law school?
How are the neighborhoods/crime rates?
I know I should be going to the open house in January but I think I'm going to go to the March one if anything.

Ok, this is not exactly channeling Dale Carnegie.Thelaw23 wrote:Hi guys, got a really high LSAT and an alright GPA but the only acceptance I got so far is from GULC. Looks like there's something really wrong with my app...
I want to get myself mentally ready for GULC...
I think it's easier to find your niche (and have it be well represented). It's a pain in 1L classes and dealing with the administration can be giant-state-U-esque, but it's fine.Thelaw23 wrote:Just wanted to ask you how the whole large class size affects you?
If you know what you want to do, and its realistic, and you develop and execute a good strategy, you should be fine. This applies to almost anything (again, realistic) you could want to do from GULC.Thelaw23 wrote:I know there is a lot of flame on GULC's employment statistics and opportunities. I'm really sorry I came off that way :/ GULC is a great school I would want to go to, it's just I didn't want to leave NY for personal reasons. So far the faculty I spoke to have all been extremely amazing people!
But thank you! How's the area and housing there? I heard some bad things about the traffic? But my friends who have visited also told me there is a great bar scene over there. (I know, not very important in the broad picture but I'm just curious)
Also, getting ready for scholarship negotiation, I can't really negotiate if I don't have any other offers that are peer schools, right? I have been told Georgetown lowballs people at first.
Edit: I reread my original post and I really apologize for how douchey and horrible that sounded

Haha, no worries. And I totally understand. I lived on campus 1L and am wayyyy off campus (2+ hours away) 2L so I can't help you there, but there's such a variety of neighborhoods you can find something that fits your needs. The traffic is awful, but its very predictable, and you can avoid it with smart timing, which is more than I can say for many metros.
Other peer offers are better for leverage, but people have been successful using larger scholarhips at lower-ranked (particularly T~30) for leverage. The main threat is just that you won't come, so you can use that regardless of your other offers. But it might be worth holding out if you think a T14 offer might come up.

It's better than it has traditionally been, but someone got shot in Mass Courts (a popular law student apartment complex across the street) two weeks ago.Thelaw23 wrote:How are the neighborhoods/crime rates?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Right by the law school in one direction is shady/notgreat territory; the other direction is fancy apartments and nice community restaurants/bars. GULC is right between. Historically it was in a bad area but gentrification slowly fixes all.BmoreOrLess wrote:It's better than it has traditionally been, but someone got shot in Mass Courts (a popular law student apartment complex across the street) two weeks ago.Thelaw23 wrote:How are the neighborhoods/crime rates?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Can somebody help shed some more light on the process of applying for 1L summer positions (particularly when it comes to the timing of sending out apps)?
I have a couple of friends who are 2Ls & are telling me to just wait til I get grades back to apply for things (I'm hoping for a judicial internship in my hometown). They say it's generally pointless to apply before then because grades will be a large factor in the decision process.
Also I'm a bit confused about the process of applying for judicial internships in general. There's lots of DC-based internships on Symplicity where the judge is explicitly asking for apps & the application requirements are specifically listed - and when it comes to applying to firms, non-profits, etc, you can just Google "XYZ summer internship program" and they spell out all the requirements, where to send your materials, etc. But when it comes to judges in my hometown, I can't really find any info other than the judges' names.
Is it possible that some of them don't even want interns? Do I just dump a cover letter and a resume in their mailbox and hope for a response? Do some have different requirements? (e.g. references vs no references)?
Lol I have no clue what I'm doing.

From what you guys have typically seen, how do K-JDs at GULC fair in the biglaw job hunt? Does a K-JD at median have a reasonable shot at landing NY biglaw?

No one has any clue what they're doing
Don't wait for grades thats bad advice
Just start mass blasting emails to everyone and anyone. All judges probably are taking interns. Default to cover letter resume and transcript even if it doesn't have grades yet say something along the lines of I will update with grades. Then update everyone you apply to who hasn't already rejected you when you get the grades. If they ask for more things send more.
E: I didn't do judges so if there's judge specific advice that I don't know someone can chime in.

There isn't really any data on this, but anecdotally, for those I know, K-JDs vs. not K-JDs had no different outcomes really, all else being equal.no exit wrote:From what you guys have typically seen, how do K-JDs at GULC fair in the biglaw job hunt? anecdotally, folks I know with more substantial resumes (myself included) seemed to get a decent bump over what you'd expect based on raw GPA. also anecdotally, the only folks I knew who struck out were K-JDs. but yeah, there's no way to quantify this. folks with longer resumes are probably more comfortable interviewing anyway, different hiring committees care about different things, etc.EzraFitz wrote:There isn't really any data on this, but anecdotally, for those I know, K-JDs vs. not K-JDs had no different outcomes really, all else being equal.no exit wrote:From what you guys have typically seen, how do K-JDs at GULC fair in the biglaw job hunt? Thanks for the responses. That all makes sense, I suppose I am just fishing for anecdotes. I know there are plenty of other factors (interviewing skills, network, etc.) that go into it, and grades once you get there will ultimately be most important, but based on your personal knowledge, would you be able to recommend GULC to a NY biglaw or bust K-JD, debt financing with a modest (i.e., less than half tuition) scholly? (pretty hypothetical, since no scholly offer yet, but I can't help but run through scenarios)Glasseyes wrote:anecdotally, folks I know with more substantial resumes (myself included) seemed to get a decent bump over what you'd expect based on raw GPA. also anecdotally, the only folks I knew who struck out were K-JDs. but yeah, there's no way to quantify this. folks with longer resumes are probably more comfortable interviewing anyway, different hiring committees care about different things, etc.EzraFitz wrote:There isn't really any data on this, but anecdotally, for those I know, K-JDs vs. not K-JDs had no different outcomes really, all else being equal.no exit wrote:From what you guys have typically seen, how do K-JDs at GULC fair in the biglaw job hunt? I wouldn't, no. I'd strongly recommend against being a K-JD in general, but if I were a NYC BigLaw aspiring 0L I'd probably aim no lower than Cornell with a substantial scholarship.no exit wrote: Thanks for the responses.
