Im an incoming 1L and I see that my enrollment date is today, even though UVA told me sections for 1Ls are assigned a few days before orientation. What's this all about?

Re: UVA Law Students Taking Questions
Has anyone ever successfully broken a lease at ivy gardens. I renewed my lease but circumstances have changed and it would be helpful to get out.
Since the chances of finding another tenant are slim to none, i'm wondering if I have any chance at all.

Re: UVA Law Students Taking Questions
Unsolicited advice from someone who just got done taking two state bar exams:
Everyone told me in law school not to worry about taking classes that covered subjects that would be tested on the bar. But having just spent the last ten weeks or whatever studying for this thing, I have now concluded that that advice sucks. Studying for the bar is a pretty miserable experience, and I was really grateful that I had taken every subject tested on the multistate and almost every subject tested on the state exam.
So if you are wondering what classes to take during your last year or two of law school, my unsolicited, sure-to-be-questioned advice is to take these courses at some point:
Evidence (big subject on the multistate, tested heavily on both my state exams)
Trusts and Estates (tested heavily on both my state exams)
Family Law (tested on one of my state exams, but also gives you some good insight to choice of law, which was tested on both)
Corporations (tested heavily on both state exams, and it gives you good insight to agency and partnership, which are also tested)
I kind of wish I took something having to do with commercial paper and secured transactions, because both of those showed up, too, but not as heavily.

Wondering if you took the Virginia exam? Do you think the Virginia Practice and Procedure course would be a big help to someone planning to take the VA bar?StanleyF wrote:Unsolicited advice from someone who just got done taking two state bar exams:

Some of these I am sure have been answered so forgive me but:
1) how/when do we get parking passes?
2) how/where did some of you 0Ls find out about getting student ID cards? When should I do that?
3) Is there going to be any required reading/books we should get before the first day of classes or will they go over that on Aug 19?

1) You'll get an e-mail about parking passes, and they also tell you what you need to know during orientation week. The parking lots are open with no passes requires for the first couple weeks to give people time to get their passes, so don't worry about it. If you really want to jump the gun, the parking services building is on Milmont, right behind the Barracks Road Shopping Center and very close to the law school. Not sure when the earliest you can go in is, but you could call and ask. You'll have to buy a pass for the Blue Lot, and can enter a lottery for the D-1 lot, which is closer to school.
2) You should get an e-mail about this too. When I was a 0L, we had to go onto main grounds to get IDs. Not sure if it still works that way. No rush on this either...the school is open during the day, and I can't think what else we really use our student IDs for.
3) Do you have your school e-mail and login yet? Professors will typically e-mail you a week or so out if you have an assignment for the first day. If you can login, then you can also go onto LawWeb, where there is a link to all of your classes, and professors post syllabi there. Try to buy books asap if you want a used one in good condition, as they'll go quickly. The Public Interest Law Association also hosts a book sale every year that will start a week or so before classes where you can buy used books. These are often a little more beat up, but some are in condition, and they're all pretty cheap.
Long story short: don't sweat this stuff. I remember being overwhelmed by all the various tasks I had at this point, but they'll tell you everything you need to know and walk you through it. You'll also have PAs who will answer any lingering questions (you meet them the first day).

Route 29 South is probably the most frustrating driving experience I've ever had. Will need to learn the conversion from actual miles to Route 29 miles soon.

Short answer: yes.Br3v wrote:So I should have all my books bought by day 1?
You can take a gamble and hope you don't get cold called on the first day. (Obligatory advice to 1Ls: having a bad cold call is an insignificant occurrence and is certainly not the end of the world...no one will remember or care - not your professors, certainly not your peers...you'll pick up the pieces of your life and move on just fine...etc.) Of course, the vast majority of 1Ls by nature care about doing well on cold calls in the early days. So, just bear in mind that if you do not have your books by the first day of class, you might get cold called and it might not be pretty.
If you cannot afford to buy your books until the loan money goes out, you have at least two options:
1. You can charge the books at the bookstore to your student account and the bill will be deducted directly from your loan money
2. You can do your reading out of the casebooks in the library until you get the loan money

Yeah I am with noodley I for sure cant afford to buy them until I get loan money.....
But fellow 0Ls, have you heard anything about assignments on SIS? I do not really know how to use it. I assume the answer has to be no because we do not even know what section we are in yet?

Can I do that as soon as I get my section info? That doesn't sound like an awful option.

If I had an assignment or wanted to see an uploaded syllabus, where would I look on Lawweb?
I wont be able to see those until I am assigned classes though correct? (which I think is Aug 16th for incoming 1Ls)

Re: UVA Law Students Taking Questions
I noticed before that you mentioned looking on SIS for assignments. Just to be clear, SIS and Lawweb are 2 different things and assignments will be on Lawweb. Your current courses are listed as soon as you log into Lawweb and you can see assignments by clicking on a class.Br3v wrote:If I had an assignment or wanted to see an uploaded syllabus, where would I look on Lawweb?

That said, you're right in that you won't be able to see your assignments until you're assigned your classes.

Can we even sign into law web yet? I think I tried awhile ago and wasn't able to for some reason.

0L's should also be aware that PILA hold a pretty huge book sale at the start of each semester.
If you're case book is not a new edition, there's a good chance you could pick up a cheap copy there if you show up early.
You'll also find hornbooks E&E etc for all your courses.
