Idk if this has already been discussed, but how do k-jds relate to older students? and how might this affect my job prospects seeing that I will be competing with or compared to students who have WE?

In terms of relating to other students - it doesn't really matter how old you are in comparison to your classmates. 1Ls all tend to hang out together because they're sharing similar experiences in terms of classes/1L stress. In my experience, students who are "older" e.g. married usually bring their spouses out with them. NU is a pretty social school.
In terms of job competition - keep in mind that a lot of people who have "work experience" didn't do insanely awesome and unique things (some did. most didn't) so as long as you can show that you had some types of experiences in UG that taught you basic skills of time management/maturity/responsibility/cooperation then you'll be just fine. when you start at NU, try to join clubs and become a 1L rep.

From: Clifford Zimmerman
To: Class of 2014
Subject: of sunflowers, grit, and the bar exam

Subject: of sunflowers, grit, and the bar exam
I ran through the botanic gardens this weekend. On the prairie, the grasses stood tall – about 2 1/2 to 3 feet above the ground. Amidst the tall grasses, the sunflowers extended their necks even higher so that they could soak in the sunshine unobstructed by the other prairie growth. Several had turned to the sun and were starting to open.
Most sunflowers I have seen are in fields with other sunflowers where they look pretty much like any other crop. Growing identically to the ones next to them and so on down the line. In a thick prairie (thanks to all of the rain we have had) the sunflowers fought to get through, and to extend high as these were doing. They had fought hard to get high above the prairie in the battle for the sunlight that they need to thrive and succeed.
So what makes these sunflowers, literally, stand out in the field? Is it resilience? We use that term often (think Dr. Durr here). Resilience is about the ability to cope with and respond to very stressful and deeply challenging circumstances (think catastrophes). On the other hand, is it grit? Grit is defined by Dr. Angela Duckworth as "sticking with things over the very long term until you master them." Thus, grit complements resilience, either kicking in once resilience emerges or operating in situations where resilience was not needed. Grit is currently under deep study (see the work of Carolyn Dweck, published in Mindset, and the research of Angela Duckworth), though much is already said on the direct correlation between a person having grit and that person achieving success. The sunflowers may be genetically or environmentally resilient, or temporally gritty.
If you have not already figured out how this relates to you and the bar, then you might need to reach a bit deeper than your classmates during the next week of bar prep. This week, the second to last week before the bar, is the one where you need push yourself the hardest, where you need to rise above the heights that are the limit for everyone else. Over this week, you need to extend yourself and your studies firmly and definitively into the professional space in the air above the prairie of law school learning. Call it what you want, but that is where you need to go this week. In that air is the critical learning and synthesis of the bar information that you have been immersed in for weeks.
Be a sunflower – proud, gritty, and tall – pushing with all your might to search for and reach that you need to succeed.
And enjoy being in that place.
Cliff.

Cliff legit took 90 minutes during orientation week trying to mint a solid metaphor between law school and exam blue books.
I wish I had walked out then and there.

If you hear of others getter LR offers and a day or so goes by, then you didn't get LR. (98% chance you got your second choice though).starz wrote:Do journal calls really take weeks!? If it did happen I take it we could not find out until after bidding closes, but they couldn't keep that a secret through CB/Offer season right?Desert Fox wrote:Sounds like someone is fucking with us. No way would MB announce that.Cobretti wrote:Has anyone heard anything about this...

I seriously doubt it. Two student groups I'm on just got our biggest donations from Mayer. Seems like they would cut that type of thing first, before doing no-offers (granted, it is less money than paying an associate, but still).

I call bullshit. Sure, they had a really bad 2013, but I'm with DF. No way a firm would come out and announce that or let it leak.

I dunno, bjs could clarify this, but the Winston dump leaked before August iirc.Georgia Avenue wrote:I call bullshit. Sure, they had a really bad 2013, but I'm with DF. No way a firm would come out and announce that or let it leak.

There were rumblings that all was not well in mudville, but nobody had any clue what that meant. The extent of the no-offers blindsided all of us.homestyle28 wrote:I dunno, bjs could clarify this, but the Winston dump leaked before August iirc.Georgia Avenue wrote:I call bullshit. Maybe I'm just remembering the big cut in class sizes from 2012 to 2013 as a precursor...bjsesq wrote:There were rumblings that all was not well in mudville, but nobody had any clue what that meant. IIRC, it was leaked Winston was doing shitty. But they didn't leak "we are going to no offer half NU students" even though thats what they did.homestyle28 wrote:I dunno, bjs could clarify this, but the Winston dump leaked before August iirc.Georgia Avenue wrote:I call bullshit. If it was "they are going to no offer people" I might believe it but this is too specific.
