Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Are places near Metcalf Park dangerous to live like ones on Clemens, Syracuse Ave, Heman Ave, or Leland Ave?
Can anyone share his/her experience with metro link at night?
Thanks!

Castlereagh fits all of those criteria, IMO. I can send you a pm tomorrow with more detail on my experience if you like.dpu wrote:I know this has been answered in part, but are any current students willing to give a more comprehensive overview of living in the Quadrangle buildings? Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
the hard thing for the 90% who aren't in the top 10% is accepting that you can't just work hard and get results like you used to be able to. You can work really hard and then after grades come back feel like you should have just eff'd around all semester instead of breaking your back. Also there is usually a select group that refuse to interact on normal human-being terms. Everything is law. They talk about it when you're at a bar, at thanksgiving dinner, all the damn time. So I guess the hard thing is that most people cant just chill out.840e wrote:For those who have already done 1L at Wash U, what was the most unanticipated hard thing about 1L? Obviously it is going to be a lot of work, lot of reading, exams are going to be hell, figuring out 1L summer work is going to be tough...
And on the flip side, any unexpected good surprises?
many thanks for all the help and insight that is provided on this board!
Nothing is particularly good about 1L. I mean people can say things like "i love what i'm learning" or "i'm excited to crush finals and get a great job this summer" ... but fact is 1L sucks.
You'll meet some cool people, you'll have some laughs, you'll be overly nerdy and make legal puns and jokes. There will be ball games, BBQs, law prom... But you will also get ridden hard by law school. w/o lube. Make no mistake.

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Hardest period of time for me during 1L was mid spring semester. It seemed like the walls were closing in for a few weeks there: Open Brief, Oral Arguments, Midterms, 1L summer job search, and that joke of a legal research exam.
Honestly that week was more stressful than the finals periods of both semesters.
Funnest part about 1L: After a while, you realize its kind of lulzy and that most of Lawl skool is BS. Some people don't realize this though, and continue to be super law nerds and live in the library.

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Both of the above are credited. Look for people who aren't dicks, commiserate with them, and don't eat/sleep/breathe law school - you don't have to. It's a process that can seem senseless and random, and things happen that you can't control. Be a normal human being/a good d00d, roll with the punches, and do what you can/just do you/whatever platitude you like. Also, second semester around 1L OCI is hell. Completely agree with Oban.

It's all luck of the draw - none of my 6 professors this year gave midterms, other sections had like 3 or 4.0LNewbie wrote:Wait, how many 1L profs give midterms?

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Wow, I didn't know it was that prevalent. I thought practically no one did it.
Also, getting back to a previous post, I heard anecdotally that the "dick" population was relatively low at wash u... is that not the case?
I guess it would be hard to control for or predict that from one incoming class to the next...

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Nah, it is. Low gunner population, people are generally cool, I like our class (last year's 2L and 3L classes seemed similar, but I don't know them as well as other rising 2Ls). Doesn't mean there aren't people you'd rather avoid, y'know.0LNewbie wrote:Wow, I didn't know it was that prevalent. I thought practically no one did it.

Edit: oh, I see. I should have said "avoid the people who are" instead. Mah bad

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Charter is the worst, either do Uverse or Directv and AT&T internet.
I ride the Metro at all times of day/night (I am male though), just be smart and keep your eyes open.
There aren't really many "dicks" at Wash U but there are plenty of standard LS neurotics.

Low d-bag population in comparison to other schools for sure. But they still exist. And they seem to try to make up for their scarcity buy being extra douche-tacular.0LNewbie wrote:Wow, I didn't know it was that prevalent. I thought practically no one did it.

The rising 2Ls, on average, seemed less fun that what are now the rising 3Ls. But maybe people were extra stressed about school because of the economy or something. <shrug>

Greenfield gives a midterm. No one is sure whether or not it actually counted. I found it to be really helpful because I had no idea what a law school exam was before I took it.sambeber wrote:Do you know which ones do?
Also, Norwood and Perry both gave "practice midterms" that didn't count, but provided some feedback on your answer.

You probably will. several of us haven't been shy about outing ourselves. You'll definitely meet me if you are black or interested in IP.0LNewbie wrote:Thanks for all the feedback! I hope to meet some of you all IRL.

Re: WUSTL 2L Taking Questions
Quandrangle apartments are of decent quality, nothing fancy. Odds are you aren't going to find one with granite counter tops. However, for the most part they are close to the law school and Quandrangle is literally the best rental company I have ever rented from (no doubt due to the fact that they can only rent to Wash U students). And by best I mean both responsive and not anal retentive. For example, every repair was done with 48 hours of us notifying them of the need for it, and we only gave our apartment a cursory cleaning before we moved out and I had my security deposit back within 2 weeks.dpu wrote:I know this has been answered in part, but are any current students willing to give a more comprehensive overview of living in the Quadrangle buildings? i found this place which i liked a lot. I got a full bedroom that i liked a lot for ~1000. Queen size bed, pillow top mattress, box spring, night stand, dresser, mirror. they delivered too within a few days. I didnt feel like i was living on a budget at all.tls_je wrote:Where do you buy furniture? Is there any place that does delivery?
http://www.stlouisdiscountmattress.com/
you can call a few hours in advance and set up an appt. the showroom is about 30 mins away and they take a day or two to deliver, but overall i would def recommend

But your other option is AT&T DSL. AT&T is horrendous. I canceled my service and have gone without internet at my apartment since March. AT&T was so bad, I refuse to pay them.Oban wrote:Charter, most people hate charter, like to the point of sending mail bombs hate.sambeber wrote:Can any current students comment on what the cable/internet provider options are?
