Thanks again guys. Does anyone have any suggestions on a book that I could read over winter break to hopefully improve my understanding of what comprises good legal writing? Also, I ended up registering for Buzbee's Legislation & Regulation course... Is there such a thing as a supplement for that course or should I just roll with the casebook?

The casebook explains everything, there's really no need for a supplement. PM me if you want an outline.

Best thing for Tague, have pre-written answers for possible questions. This saved me from outlining during the exam for at least one of the questions. If you look at his previous exams, they have minor variances, but are basically the same. You can also tell the differences between A, A-, B+, B exams that he has up there. I spent more time studying the previous exams than my outline. Have a position, mention as many theories and Rules as you can to support both positions, and you're golden.
having never gone to class, I do know there are rules; however, what are these "theories" you are talking about?

Also, it's not so much reading books as practicing the craft that will improve your legal writing. Not sure there's much you can do over break in that regard unfortunately.

I really like Brian Garner's books. But you should probably be focusing on what your prof wants.

Try not to sweat a bad (which you don't even know is bad yet) memo though. You would be shocked by how bad some of your classmates' writing is. Not a lot of people are particularly good at legal writing, especially at this stage. You'll get better after this exam period just by having done a ton of legal writing preparing for exams (assuming you're taking every practice exam available, which you should).

Best thing you can do is pander to your professor and use/follow all of their little writing quirks. I am an objectively bad writer and was below median on my memo, but got an A- because I crushed the brief by doing every single thing the professor mentioned in class (e.g., use passive voice for bad facts or bury them at the end of sentance/paragraph). LRW is honestly much less about your legal analysis and more about how you structure everything. Just really try to do exactly what your prof says they like.

My LRW prof assigned Point Made by Ross Gruberman. I basically just replicated that on spring briefs and did well. That might not work (grade wise) in a class where that book isn't assigned, but it has tons of really good examples of good legal writing and I actually kind of enjoyed reading it.

i haven't taken his classes but i've heard him speak and he's pretty compelling

i have to imagine a siedman con law class would be hyper political tho especially given the current climate

Seidman is both delightful and insane. And yes expect hyper political.

How is the neighborhood just east of Union Station, i.e. 3rd St. NE? Is it markedly worse than the places just west of 395, i.e. 3rd St. NW? I'm looking for a condo, so I don't want to buy into a depressed neighborhood.

I live in NOMA, around the area you're looking at. I love it. It's hard to find better location+space for the money

Seconding this, it's really a great area to be.

Edit: Also it is extremely quick and easy to bike from, which makes the commute super easy.

Hilarious dude. Take him for PR, it was great. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take him for a black letter doctrinal. You've been warned.

If there is one thing GULC does well, it is give away free beer. Take advantage of it, because nothing else is ever cheap.
this was terrible advice Ezra his PR class was terrible. just rambling stories for 2 hours and I fully expect to be the D he seems to give out once a year

quite possibly the worst educational experience of my life
the book he uses is goddamn awful too, it's not just the infuriatingly useless classes

People who liked Schrag for Civ Pro seemed to like him for PR (but it's supposedly more work as a 3 credit class). I know I would not have enjoyed being in his class again though, so I didn't look into it.

I did not like Schrag at all, but liked Tague for PR. Maybe I'm the outlier haha. Definitely agree with all negative reviews for Evidence though.
