SMU does budget a $2600 miscellaneous expense so maybe this could offset the cost?

Get a roommate if you are single. If you only want to spend $600/month you can get either a really crappy 1 bedroom or split a decent 2 bedroom. If you're married, tough luck; hopefully your spouse is working and can pay for a decent place to live.

Yeah I definitely plan on having a roommate. I was really only looking to spend around $750 after utilities per month on a two bed/two bath place. I will try to scope out a few places on the 23rd after ASD and see what I find.

There's an ASD on the 23rd? I didn't see it on the calendar on SMU's website, but I did see one on May 20 (which was also noted in my acceptance packet).

Full-time ASD is the 23rd, Part-time is May 20.

The library opens at 7:30. The other buildings are open earlier than that, but I'm not sure exactly how much earlier.

Do the 1Ls keep the professors that they have in the fall for the spring semester? So, if you have Crespi teaching contracts in the fall, does he stay your professor for contracts in the spring?

BTW any thoughts on Crespi? I like his economics and law background, but i dont know much about his teaching style.

Yes, your professor remains the same for all of the year-long classes: Contracts, Property, Torts, Civ Pro, and legal writing. You'll have Crim Law in the fall and Con Law I in the spring.

No thoughts on Crespi, I'm in the other section. betasteve can chime in on that.

FYI - Schedules for the fall have been posted, so you can see what the schedule looks like for sections 1 and 2 (and evening students). View here: http://www.law.smu.edu/Default.aspx?DN= ... 707102ba5d

Also, exam schedules are here: http://www.law.smu.edu/Default.aspx?DN= ... 1103b45f35

Of course, you won't find out your section until a week or so before orientation, but you can get an idea for what your week will look like.

No one cares LOL. Everyone sticks with their undergrad teams. They have a nice tailgate for free food, but people pretty much go there to eat and leave.

Is the LRWA class graded?

What are your thoughts on this class regarding workload, curriculum, etc.?
Does any of this depend on which professor you get?

How well does the class improve your writing? Obviously that will depend on how much work you put into it, but what is the quality and quantity of resources available to students?

How often does the law school hold "bar review" (drinking, not thinking) activities, and how well attended are they? Where are they usually held?

Also, I've heard good things about Professor Forrester. Has anyone taken her Land Use course; if so, how was it?

I'd like to know this too. And on that note, what are the thoughts on barrister's ball and other SBA activities.

LRWA is a beast. It is graded. Your fall grade is your memo, your spring grade is your brief. The class requires a great deal of work as there are ungraded assignments throughout each semester. You can't blow them off entirely because completion is required, but you'll learn how much effort you need to put into them. Here's a hint: not much. It's good practice, but don't quit reading for other classes to do your LRWA work.

The workload is roughly the same for each professor, but class experience varies pretty widely. Some professors have a reputation for being much more difficult than others. Just ask your mentors during orientation - they'll give you a good idea of whether you're in good shape or screwed.

The class was very helpful. It's 6 hours of research and writing practice. Since a lot of schools have 1-2 hours of pass/fail legal writing, I can't help but think that SMU students are better off from a practical standpoint.

That being said, I won't hide the fact that there are times in each semester that the class is just a beating. You will hate it at points. The brief is (by admission of virtually every 2L and 3L I know) the absolute worst part of law school. But you survive, you get it done, and you move on. It's a good class, but not a lot of fun.

I think bar review is monthly. I haven't attended, so I can't give any info on that.

Forrester is a very good prof. She's very interested in making sure you know the material and she is very maternal. Her use of Socratic method is very low key. You're definitely on call, but she'll help you get to the answers. I had her for Property and will try to take at least one more class from her.

Barrister's Ball is tomorrow - so I'll try to remember to come back and comment on that. SBA does have multiple activities throughout the year, most of which seem to be fairly well attended and a lot of fun. Of course, give out free beer and law students are going to show up.

+1

LRWA is horrible; I spent more time doing work for that class than any other. The memo sucks. The brief sucks. You learn lots.

I agree, however, that SMU students are better for it; and while I admit UT generally dominates us, I hear from UT law students that their pass/fail legal writing program is a joke.

Agreed - to the point that they write whiny editorials to the campus newspaper.

Heard Crespi (upper classes) = tight curve.

I would highly recommend his BE class. He is very straight-forward and makes the material easy to understand. I think the curve is tight because his exams are also straight forward and didn't offer any tricks or curveballs. If you went to class and were well prepared, you knew exactly what was going to be on the exam. While there were no tricks, it was a hell of a time crunch, and you would be crazy to take him if you plan on hand writing your exam.

I look forward to taking the class. :)

Any comparisons between Crespi and Steinberg (evening BE prof)?

Anyone know how hard it is to transfer from PT to FT? Do you have to take summer classes?

From what I can tell it's not hard at all. They offer a presentation every year about part-time students switching to full-time or graduating earlier.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
