No idea.
If any other 0L's have questions now's the time. I am merely a 1L so if you have questions like the above then don't bother asking me.

Now that I realize how wildly arbitrary grades are, I feel extremely zen. The rest of law school is going to be hella chill. Those dang 2Ls and 3Ls were right all along...

Do you think grades are arbitrary in that they don't actually reflect exam performance, or just arbitrary in the sense that exam performance doesn't correlate strongly with reading/exam prep/intelligence?Sls17 wrote:Now that I realize how wildly arbitrary grades are, I feel extremely zen. How do book awards work? Do they just show up next to your grade in Axess? Does every class have them? Even LRW? Never really knew they existed til I got here.

They only show up on your transcript, not under grades in Axess. I think I heard once that not every professor gives them (but all are allowed to give up to 1 per 15 people), but I have no idea if that's true or not.banks wrote:How do book awards work? Well I only have two grades back so far, but I got a P in the class where I understood everything and worked the hardest and an H in the class I punted. Soooo.... Punt more? I seriously don't even know.WashingtonIrving wrote:Do you think grades are arbitrary in that they don't actually reflect exam performance, or just arbitrary in the sense that exam performance doesn't correlate strongly with reading/exam prep/intelligence?Sls17 wrote:Now that I realize how wildly arbitrary grades are, I feel extremely zen. Official only or unofficial too? Grades are confusing here. When you get them, what they're for... Glad they don't matter much

Book prizes come out after grades. There will be several e-mails in the coming weeks that'll announce the names of the classes where the professor has uploaded the book prizes to Axess and you can log-in and check.
What I've heard is that it's mandatory that profs give them for the 1L required courses (with the upper limit of 1 for every 15 students), but for other classes it's up to the professor whether they give them at all (the 1 for 15 upper bound still applies)

Do you know this because you have several book prizes?rehbands wrote:Book prizes have already come out for several classes. Re: Stanford c/o 2017ers taking Questions!
I mean, a few people every year get a couple book prizes during 1L fall, so it wouldn't be that crazy. Exam taking is a skill, and it makes sense that if you're good enough at it to get a book prize in one class you might be good enough to get it in multiple classes (not to take anything away from these people, who are obviously incredibly smart in addition to being good exam takers).WashingtonIrving wrote:Do you know this because you have several book prizes?rehbands wrote:Book prizes have already come out for several classes. I'm not sure if this is helpful or accurate at all, but here's someone's estimate from a few years ago: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 3&t=163408Sls17 wrote:Is median 1 H or 2?
Here's another thread that might provide some guidance: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=158290

This one seems pretty spot on to me, based both on my own talks with people and info from my clerkship advisor (who has no reason to lie to me).rehbands wrote:I'm not sure if this is helpful or accurate at all, but here's someone's estimate from a few years ago: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 3&t=163408Sls17 wrote:Is median 1 H or 2?
Remember that other than top-level clerkships and a couple boutiques, grades will have very little affect on what kind of job you can get from SLS. For those of you who did well, congrats! And for those who didn't do as well as you would have liked, try to talk to professors and see what can be improved, but don't stress out too much about it.

Re: Stanford c/o 2017ers taking Questions!
Several people in Munger have dogs, but I think they're "companion animals"--you have to have a good reason to have one. I don't think any on-campus housing allows dogs (except, again, companion animals). I doubt it would be a problem finding pet-friendly off-campus housing. If you can actually find a place to live, Stanford is fantastic for animals, with tons of areas to run around and, of course, sunny weather year around (but not so humid that pugs and other short-nosed dogs have trouble breathing).psychmusic wrote:How feasible is it to have a dog at SLS (assuming SO can bear the brunt of the dog-related labor)? I'm just concerned because housing options seem less plentiful than in larger cities, and I'm not sure how to gauge how dog-friendly the area is.

There might possibly be such a place in the world that is more dog-friendly than northern California, but I'm not too sure where such a place would be. ...Further evidenced by just how many people have managed to sneak "companion animals" into no-pets-allowed Munger.psychmusic wrote:How feasible is it to have a dog at SLS (assuming SO can bear the brunt of the dog-related labor)? This is a point where I disagree. Being below median (roughly less than 3Hs) will make your OCI rough as fuck, unless you have something else going for you. It can also shut you out of firms that are more grade selective than you might think.Yukos wrote:This one seems pretty spot on to me, based both on my own talks with people and info from my clerkship advisor (who has no reason to lie to me).rehbands wrote:I'm not sure if this is helpful or accurate at all, but here's someone's estimate from a few years ago: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 3&t=163408Sls17 wrote:Is median 1 H or 2?

At the end of the day though, it is what it is, and you have to work with what you have to work with.
