Is splurge synonymous with jizz in your fucked up sex world? Jk. But yeah I'm basically asking if people think its worthwhile to spend a lot of money on a laptop since its kind of your lifeblood in law school. Some people have said yes you spend so much time on it, others no, you dont need any real computing power so why spend da cash? And this thread really isnt too long you probably could have read it.notactuallyposting wrote:I haven't read the thread, so can somebody fill me in? Re: Splurge on a laptop?
I ordered a Lenovo T440s last week. 14" screen, i5, 8G RAM, 180G SSD. Spent about $1500 (including Office and 3 years of Norton).
I wanted a large enough screen while still easy to carry around, a comfortable keyboard, and I don't want to worry about the reliability of the machine over the next three years. My current laptop is a $650 Vaio from about four years ago. I was willing to pay a little more this time around so that it just won't be something I worry about during school.

I've yet to pull the trigger. Wondering if Lenovo has any good sales or if it's a everyday price kinda thing...

There's no need to buy a super flashy laptop, seriously. Over $800 and you're probably wasting money.

Not really sure about sales. If I were you (and I was a week ago), I'd pull the trigger ASAP. You're gonna want a few weeks to get familiar with the keyboard before you need to be taking class notes on it.Fiero85 wrote:Was looking at that exact model/set up recently. Re: Splurge on a laptop?
Has anyone here used the Apple Thunderbolt display as a home "docking station"?
I already have a MacBook Pro, and I like the idea that you only have to make two connections between the laptop and the display (and one of those two is a dedicated power cable from the display to power/charge your laptop). The back of the display has Thunderbolt, USB 2.0, Firewire and ethernet, and the display also has a webcam, microphone and speakers/subwoofer. It pretty much sounds like it turns your Macbook into a 27" iMac.

Eh - still plenty fast enough for scanners, printers, mouse/keyboard, whatever. If you want more speed for external drives, use the Thunderbolt or Firewire ports instead.redsox wrote:USB 2.0? Same position as OP (except my current computer doesn't work at all) and started the search deadset on spending less than $1k. What's killing that, though, is the difficulty in finding a 15-16" notebook with a high res display (all that reading and writing). Any suggestions? 'Cause my search keeps dragging me back to the MacBook Pro.

I've been a longtime fan of the Thinkpad series so I was going to get T440s but the reviews scared me away. The fact that they revamped the trackpad and the keyboard for the WORSE was a big turn-off. I may actually end up getting a T430s, the previous model.mt2165 wrote:Idk if you havent gotten it yet but I've heard that t440's are the shit productivity and durability wise, in a perfect world where im rich gorgeous and white i would buy a lenovo carbon x1redsox wrote:I ordered a Lenovo T440s last week. 14" screen, i5, 8G RAM, 180G SSD. I think it depends what you mean by high res, we talking full Hd or hd+ like retina?girlmonster wrote:Same position as OP (except my current computer doesn't work at all) and started the search deadset on spending less than $1k. Re: Splurge on a laptop?
I have a 2010 15" MacBook Pro i7 that I used through undergrad and is still in descent condition. I have really just been using it for photo editing since I've been out of school. My only problem with it is that it is quite heavy and also doesn't have the best battery life (~3-4 hours). I have been considering investing in a 13 inch MacBook Air for law school, but I can't decide if it's worth it. Thoughts?

If anyone doesn't care about Ultrabook features (SSD, lighter, insane battery life) and just wants a solid notebook for the price, this is worth a look.

Re: Splurge on a laptop?
I will say though that that set up is overkill unless you're photo/video editing or gaming, only cause now you have to deal with the weight and 6lbs is no joke. Great computer for the price but it's not that portable and is kinda a waste if all you do is word process and stream netflix.Serett wrote:If anyone doesn't care about Ultrabook features (SSD, lighter, insane battery life) and just wants a solid notebook for the price, this is worth a look.

If you're looking for higher-than-HD resolution (ie MacBook Pro Retina), be careful with Windows in general. Mac OS handles high-res very well: it keeps everything the same physical size, it just throws more pixels at it so that it looks sharper.girlmonster wrote:Same position as OP (except my current computer doesn't work at all) and started the search deadset on spending less than $1k. Windows is much less capable at handling higher-than-HD (QHD, etc). It will keep everything the same amount of pixels, so it just looks really really tiny on your screen. Some applications handle it better than others, but you will not get universal compatibility with HD+ on a Windows.
Bottom line: If you are dead-set on HD+, you need a mac.

Re: Splurge on a laptop?
That's a good question! I'm interested in HD+, because I read that's best to avoid eye strain. I admit I don't really know much on the subject, though. Do you have an opinion on this, or suggestions?mt2165 wrote: I think it depends what you mean by high res, we talking full Hd or hd+ like retina?
Thanks for the info! I've read sidenotes about this issue, but figured it had mostly been resolved by now since the resolutions keep going higher. Do you think this will still impact me if I have very basic computer needs?yot11 wrote:

Lenovo Carbon x1 is a pretty sleek machine, but the way they messed up the keyboard was a dealbreaker for me. I woulda pulled the trigger if not for the screwy keyboard. Gotta type as fast as possible on my exams. And less battery life than the 6 cell T440.
Just bought a T440s today instead. FYI to people buying laptops - negotiate! I missed the Lenovo 4th of July sale but negotiated that price plus a couple small perks. Obviously utilize a student discount, but don't be afraid to ask for more. I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah. Wouldn't blame you. I'm not too concerned, because I'm coming from a Vaio with the worst keyboard/trackpad ever. Biggest concerns are reliability and longevity.heythatslife wrote:I've been a longtime fan of the Thinkpad series so I was going to get T440s but the reviews scared me away.
