It would be easy to leave a car somewhere safe in Palo Alto, though you might be better off trading your car (if you have one) for a zipcar membership if you plan to live on or very close to campus.

I realize that this is a really small sample size, but i'm curious as to when you guys submitted/heard back. Were you all admitted straight away, or did anyone make it in off the waitlist?

Any tips for the long wait to hear back from schools?

I submitted on February 1st and got in off the waitlist on July 29th. Don't be like me. I know of at least two others that were admitted later than that, but I don't think there were many more. It was grueling to wait six months for the call, but it's been well worth it. I got the waitlist letter in mid-April and sent in two LOCIs (April/July) and two additional recs before getting the call from Dean Deal. Having been a Stanford undergrad probably made my promise of snap-accepting an offer of admission more believable. Putting in my two weeks notice at my old job twenty minutes after hearing from Faye was a top five moment in my life thus far.

In theory, the book prizes can be awarded to anyone in the class. I suspect that they will go to students who earn Honors, though.

And Kretzy, the housing system screwed us. My 1L roommate and I got lunatic roommates, while you got three awesome 1Ls. I demand expectation damages.

I'm glad to see that housing worked out a solution here, but I'm going to miss having you guys across the hall and taking part in all of the whiteboard trolling. C'est la vie.


Happy to answer any questions about the waitlist process (though it's a little early to discuss that) or how to mitigate damages from applying late in the cycle. I'm also equipped to discuss what it's like to come back to grad school at the same place you went to undergrad only with much better football. Winning the Orange Bowl would put us two wins shy of the number we had during my UG time here (14).

I also did not do a Why Stanford? originally, so I was not sure if I should maybe go this route instead of a LOCI at this point. Do you think either of these might help?

Since Stanford is about to close for the break, I figure I can take a week or two to write these and send them in.

LOCIs are appropriate precisely and only when you have new information of some relevance to your application. I wrote two, each of which was about two sentences in length. The first noted that my girlfriend admitted to a Stanford PhD program; the second that I had a new LSAT score. I'd be wary of sending an LOCI just to note that you're still interested in Stanford — the school has little if any reason to expect that it's anything other than the/a top choice for each applicant, so emphasizing your interest seems redundant at best.

Do you think its with sending an email noting that I got straight As this quarter and my lsdas gpa will be going up? Only about .02 though.

No — your GPA is subject to change (for better or for worse), so I don't imagine that an update on where it is now is really that useful or informative.

Also, if straight As only bumped your GPA by .02, your GPA isn't keeping you out.

Yeah, that's what I did. I was just considering the option of having a positive update in my file since it's been UR since mid-Oct. But okay, I won't send a LOCI.

Ha, I didn't mean to come at you that hard. I'd relax a bit and enjoy your holiday. This is my humble opinion, and I know it seems like forever, but it's a little early for a LOCI. I remember last year thinking that decisions really started to get rolling between February and April, so maybe send one a little before/right about then. That also gives you some time to add some meat to the LOCI with accomplishments in addition to the 'why Stanford.'

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I think it is probably too soon for a LOCI, but I was also thinking about visiting next semester, so I may decide to put together a LOCI after I visit in case my visit inspires me with new ideas.

I just didn't feel like my application conveyed enough of the why I want go to Stanford.

1- I haven't talked to anyone that is aiming for entertainment law, but I'm sure there are a couple out there. There's a strong concentration of California and thus LA natives here, and I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of them ended up working in sports/entertainment law.

2- We've only had the fall intramural season thus far, but flag football was quite popular. I captained and ended up with around 20 1Ls on the team and had to turn away some people. I am expecting intramural basketball to be quite popular, too. Basketball tends to be the most organized, well-run intramural sport at Stanford because games never rainout and it's always easy to get at least 5 people to show up and play on a weeknight.

There's also a healthy community for pickup basketball and football that we run through various email lists/fbook groups.

3- Other SLSers should correct me if I'm wrong, but I think around 1/3 of the people who do the LR writing exercise are selected for LR.

Awesome that sounds like so much fun. I'd love to get in on some intramural spots in LS. Is it just for fun type deal, or is it really competitive, or what?

There seem to be pickup games 2-3 nights a week in any number of sports. There are small groups that run varying distances as well, and at one point or another during the semester a few of us got into rowing/erging. Football, kickball, capture the flag, soccer, and basketball all happen regularly.

I think 1/3 sounds about right, since not everyone does the write-on, the class is small, and there are 40 or so spots on LR.

I am still a bit undecided about going, but I am definitely leaning towards it. If I do go, I am also thinking Thursday, probably in the afternoon, through Friday night or Saturday morning. By appointment, do you mean like for a tour, attending a class, or meeting with someone in admissions?
