When you know nothing about Berkeley, or anything about living situations in major cities, please don't speak up. Otherwise you sound like a fool. And if you think those are tiny rooms, my advice to you, don't ever consider schools in NYC, because you will live in a closet.

General Tso, I am not saying everyone has to stay under $10,000, and that is why the school's financial aid office budgets your COL more than that. My point is it is possible to live in Berkeley under $10,000 year round.

The Bay, including the East Bay, is just as expensive as certain parts of Manhattan, with similarly tiny rooms. A lot of the housing in the East Bay was built in the early to mid 20th century, and the rooms are tiny with no central air/heating. When I lived in the East Bay, I lived in a tiny studio built in the 1920s in an area that's not considered nice. No outlets in the bathroom, no central air/heating, and it cost over 1000 dollars a month.

Also, Berkeley is not a "major city." It's a college town. It just has "major city" prices.

I don't think anybody ever denied that you can find housing for under $1,000 per month. What I reject is the claim that one can have less than 10k living expenses per year in Berkeley.

It is possible finding something for under 1k, especially if you share an apartment with a roommate, but finding something under 700 is unlikely, unless it's a really shitty one room very far away from campus or you share a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 other people. (I thought we were out of college?) It's difficult finding studios that are under 1k and reasonably close to campus.

You live at the I-house? I meant OFF CAMPUS housing. A lot of law students don't want to dorm again in law school because of the big deal breakers: bathroom sharing and having to eat cafeteria food. Also, I-house rooms are tiny.

The (only) plus is that it is cheap to live in (and I guess if you like partying, the STD-infested kids there have parties all the time). Downsides include having roommates, it's extremely filthy, and almost everyone who lives there does acid or other hard drugs.

And coming from 4 years of undergrad in manhattan, the craigslist postings around berkeley seem like cheap godsends. So what if you have a roommate? I lived with 2 roommates in a 1 bedroom apt on the 6th floor of a walkup built in 1900 and my rent was still over a grand a month including utilities. Everything is relative. Anyone looking for a (straight male) roomie for next year?

there are tons of co-ops where partying is kept to the weekends and only at the house 2-4 times a semester.

also, there are graduate student co-ops and individual apartments that the system owns. all in all, living in the co-op system, you could escape berkeley on less then 10k a year.

Thanks, WT. Sorry, Irishman; I haven't been on in a while. I live in the Jackson House, which is 1.5 blocks from the law school. I live in an apartment. While I do share a bathroom, it is not like in dorms where the bathrooms are communal to everyone on the floor. There are two bathrooms in my apartment, and I share mine with one other guy.

FWIW, I know people who have their own apartments/studios for roughly the same rent that I pay and they also live fairly close to campus (within 10-15 minutes walking).
