This is the first I am hearing about any of this. I was on campus from 8:00 a.m.-7p.m. today, how did no one mention broken glass and bullets?

I am sure they can't get the glass replaced by tomorrow (those are some big sheets of really thick glass and probably cost a fortune). Go check it out.Micdiddy wrote:This is the first I am hearing about any of this. I was on campus from 8:00 a.m.-7p.m. today, how did no one mention broken glass and bullets?
As for why there's no public info...I'm actually more creeped out by that than the fact that the building got shot.

It happened Saturday night or Sunday morning. Nobody seems to know what happened. It's in the library as well.rinkrat19 wrote:I am sure they can't get the glass replaced by tomorrow (those are some big sheets of really thick glass and probably cost a fortune). It is weird that shots were fired in Streeterville... but I mean that's what happens in Chicago when the weather gets warm. As a Rogers Park resident, I can accurately determine how many degrees above freezing it is by the number of gunshots I hear in any given hour.rinkrat19 wrote:I am sure they can't get the glass replaced by tomorrow (those are some big sheets of really thick glass and probably cost a fortune). 6 emails today about CTECs is pretty obnoxious.

Students check them somewhat. You generally hear about especially scathing CTEs.

They used to let you fill them out until when grades were due. I thought the most helpful aspect was being able to say whether the exam was fair or not based on class. Now that it ends with dead week, you can't do that.

Yeah, why is "Finished with course work before filling out CTE?" even a question? (or however they phrase it)Flips88 wrote:They used to let you fill them out until when grades were due. I fill them out because they take 2 minutes. *shrug* And I've definitely had a decision whether or not to take a class influenced by reading past CTEs.

Do many out of state students bring their car? Or is it not needed/not worth the hassle and $? I'm hoping to get an apartment really close to campus.

Most don't, especially those near the law school. Parking can run over $200/month and considering how good public transportation is in Chicago, there's really no need for a car.holly45 wrote:Do many out of state students bring their car? Yeah, if you're going to live in Streeterville, don't bring a car. There are Chicago neighborhoods where having a car is no biggie, but Streeterville is not one of them.bk1 wrote:Most don't, especially those near the law school. Lots, possibly most, NU students don't have a car, especially if they live close to campus where parking could be $200-300/month. The CTA has the usual petty annoyances of public transit, but it really does go pretty much everywhere and is quite easy to navigate. You can get grocery delivery for the heavy things if you are lazy like me. Plus there are Zipcars everywhere.holly45 wrote:Do many out of state students bring their car? I personally miss having a car for running errands, especially to Costco or Ikea, but I have not for a moment considered bringing my car out here even though I have one sitting fully insured in my dad's driveway 2000 miles away. Parking is just way too expensive and it's not really needed.

Having never even visited Chicago I had no idea, but guess no car it is for me! Does anyone know the rates for Zipcars? I'm trying to figure out a more accurate estimate of my COL.

Re: Northwestern 1L/2L/3L/Grads Taking Questions and Challenges
Last time I checked, the lowest Zipcar membership is $60/year plus around $10/hour for a compact car. (Sometimes there are groupon/living social deals that save quite a bit on a year's membership fee). You have to have fewer than three tickets or accidents on your record in the past three years.
But keep in mind that you're not going to use a Zipcar very much even if you have it. There's practically no reason to go to the suburbs except for Ikea, and how many times do you really need to go there? Driving it to a grocery store in town is more pain than it's worth, what with parking and everything. Having a car is great for periodic trips to Costco, but Instacart now delivers from Costco, which is amazeballs.
