I openly admit it's terrible. I wonder if the guy who hit his fiancee at Barrister's at Adler and ended up in handcuffs is going to get one.Dr. Filth wrote:how can c/o 2014 take shots at us with that awful fucking graduation shirt?

Can an NU student/grad please talk about the OCI process? On my campus tour, I remember hearing that recruiters won't know your GPA until you interview with them (or something like this). I also understand this is different than how other T14s handle OCI (i.e. you have to meet a certain cutoff at other schools to get an interview). TIA.

They don't know ahead of time, but that seems to be how a lot of schools do it.BA414 wrote:Can an NU student/grad please talk about the OCI process? Thanks! Did anyone here choose between NU and another school in the lower T14? The data indicate landing big law is easier than, say, GULC, but I'm worried this might be over-hyped (I'm not implying it is, just worried). Specifically, did anyone here choose NU over GULC because they thought better chances was sufficient to warrant NU?

I chose NU over GULC. The scholarship situation made it an easy decision, but I would have gone with NU over GULC at even money as well. I don't really know what you want to know though, there are stats out there and NU has a much smaller class size. There are situations where Georgetown makes more sense, like your personal preferences, you get a good scholly, etc. But I think all things being equal and if you just want biglaw and don't care about where, you'd want NU over GULC and I don't think many people would disagree with that.BA414 wrote:Thanks! Thanks ^, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I'm actually expecting a minimal scholly from GULC (perhaps in the 30K range over three years, prob even less), but even then, I am still currently leaning NU ($0 scholly offer, lol). The class size is a huge factor for me. Based on people I've talked to at GULC, they all tell me you have to pretty much be in the top 25-30% to land big law. Now, I understand law school/grades is highly contingent on the effort you put in, but that's a tall order, IMHO.
I'm sure it's doable, but I have a feeling the class size can engender high competition/stress, just purely because there are so many students. I didn't really get that vibe from NU. Although I get that GULC has tremendous prestige/power still, this is an incredibly difficult choice to make, because there is a pretty big difference between these schools (some of it subjective), even though they're so closely ranked.
/rant.
Also, if anyone can shed light on this, if I'm a K-JD, will I have trouble adapting to the social scene at NU? I visited and found that this shouldn't be a problem, but I'm aware that many students have their life together/spouses/families, and I wonder if I'll be missing out on a robust social scene since I'm fresh out of college and still looking to have a little fun.

Really not that many people are married, only a few have kids, and everyone is still determinedly binge-drinking like 19-year-olds, although usually with better quality alcohol.BA414 wrote:Also, if anyone can shed light on this, if I'm a K-JD, will I have trouble adapting to the social scene at NU? A bunch of different shit. I was almost never at school for a while after a breakup, cancer scare, and a bunch of other shit. They noticed my absence. Couple that with a horribly written exam, and you get a D. I can't really push it on them.Snape wrote:With Elrod!? What happened?bjsesq wrote:I got a D in state and local. Re: Northwestern 1L/2L/3L/Grads Taking Questions and Challenges
One of the other reasons I chose NU (besides the cash money; i was going to come at equal cost though) is that I have a preference for Chicago over DC. So getting the proximity advantage here counted for more. Couple that with the fact that the DC market is really tough, the advantage seemed bigger in a meaningful way beyond the mere personal preference.lgleye wrote:Those of us who chose NU over GULC were probably (at least initially) guided by the perception that NU = Biglaw, while GULC = BigGov. I've got friends who went the other way and are now at GULC. One thing, though, is that I'm a whole lot happier here than they are at GULC, and it's primarily because of the student body.BA414 wrote:I have a feeling the class size can engender high competition/stress, just purely because there are so many students. Yeah, we bitch about D-Rod, crappy OSC, lack o support/facilities, etc., but I really respect/admire my classmates, their experiences, etc. Although quite a few of them are gunners, yo0u'd never know it from their demeanor when we socialize, study, or go thru OCI (except there's one person I know who's a total ass....you guys probably know him/her as well). Unless you're that one person, you'll really like it hear.
I'm sure some people like GULC but I had a coworker who graduated from there and just had awful things to say about every aspect of the law school experience and law students in general. Clearly anecdotal, but this impression was pretty drastically countered by posters ITT and my experience on campus. So this pushed in the direction of NU too though the secondary market stuff was a bigger consideration.
I'll also confirm that people here work really hard but the obnoxious classmate is the exception. My section had two profs tell people on multiple occasions that our section is the first one they've had that didn't have a gunner in it. Maybe that's what they tell every girl but that's another data point to take into account.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
