Re: UVA Law Students Taking Questions
This is my first time moving to a different state and nobody in my fam has ever left either. Will I have to re-register my car in VA, get a VA Driver's license, and get different insurance? Anything else you can think of? Probably an embarrassing question, but y'all are the best.

No to each question. You can even re-register your car in your home stateNorth wrote:This is my first time moving to a different state and nobody in my fam has ever left either. My electricity bill has ranged from $75 to $120 so far. Water is covered in your rent. Internet is technically free as well, but it sucks ass so you'll probably want to get high speed internet. Cable and internet package will probably be around $100 per month. One thing to keep in mind regarding your loans is that you may end up in a job that doesn't pay your 1L summer, so you might need your loans to stretch the whole year rather than just the school year.shadowofjazz wrote:How much do utilities (heat, electric, water, cable, internet) come out to per month (on average)? Also, how much does food come out to for someone who doesn't eat out often and eats healthy but frugally? I just got my loan package and want to know if I really need to accept all of this (I may or may not get a scholarship in April if there are any left).berkeleykel06 wrote:I live in an unfurnished one bedroom in the Jeffersonian. From what I can see from the pictures she sent me, my apartment has a large living room/bedroom, a narrowish kitchen and a small hallway with a nook for dining.
Bedroom: I have a queen bed, night stand, and large dresser in the bedroom and it all fits well.
Dining room: The space for the dining table is pretty rectangular so that's what I went with, though I think a round one would be fine too.
Living room: I have a couch, chair (my overstuffed chair is a little snug so you'll probably want to stick to a normal-sized one), small computer desk, medium/large TV stand, side table, coffee table, and bookshelf. You will need a floor lamp in the living room because there is no overhead lighting there.
Kitchen: Doesn't come with a microwave, which I didn't realize until I moved in. I was able to easily fit a storage cabinet and kitchen cart (the cart isn't necessary but I wanted a bit more counter space).

Hi all,
In case anyone is looking, I have a summer sublet available starting from about May 16 - Mid August. It is 2 Bed/2Bath, fully furnished, and rent is TBD (though I plan on giving a really good deal and will pay utilities myself). The location is arden place (which was just built, and I am the first person to live in my apartment).
PM me with Qs!

Thanks for the info about the electricity. How bad are we talking with the wireless? Any chance you can run this? http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/berkeleykel06 wrote:My electricity bill has ranged from $75 to $120 so far. Water is covered in your rent. I can definitely make do without cable (I have access to Netflix + Hulu + HBOGo), but high speed internet is a must (for those 3 especially!).
On a completely separate note: some of the TLS UVA accepted students are organizing a (small) get together for the Friday night of ASW. If anyone is interested in stopping by to say hello, feel free to post in the Class of 2016 Forum. We would definitely appreciate any tips/advice/bar recommendations.

The free wireless is so bad that I couldn't even open the page to do the test. It randomly stops working all the time (say for half hour periods numerous times a day). I think how bad it is also depends on where your apartment is, so you might want to try it out for a few days when you move in before deciding.shadowofjazz wrote:Thanks for the info about the electricity. Edit: I finally got the test to work. Downloads speed was .06 Mbps and upload speed was .14 Mbps. lol.

At first, how did you OOS students cope with moving to an entirely new place in VA? I'm assuming many of you were 'alone' and many of you left family and friends, and so how did you deal with the transition and what kind of things made it easier? Related comments are appreciated

I'm from out of state. Parents and girlfriend still in FL and didn't know a single person before heading up to ASW last year. I didn't find the transition to be bad at all though. If you come from a big undergrad, see if there are any others from your school at UVA. It provides an instant connection.MrHairyLegs wrote:At first, how did you OOS students cope with moving to an entirely new place in VA? It's also important to remember though that about 60% of school is from out of state, so most people are coming in without knowing anyone. You'll make friends quickly, especially within your section.
The way my roommates (who I hadn't met before moving in) and I met everyone and quickly got over the "alone" feeling was actually pretty simple - we threw a kegger.

So how much would it be for a good high speed internet/cable package? I saw $100/month floated out there earlier, that seem about right? Just trying to do some early budgeting.

I called the number the Jeffersonian gave me for Comcast. Here are the quotes I got:
TV Only(160+ channels)
$49.99 for first 6 months
$69.99 for next 6 months
$83.90 after 12 months
Year 1 Cost: $683.88
Year 2 Cost: $1,006.80
Year 3 Cost: $1,006.80
Total cost for three years: $2,697.48
Internet Only (20 mbps download)
$34.99 for first 6 months
$49.99 for next 6 months
$62.95 after 12 months
Year 1 Cost: $509.88
Year 2 Cost: $755.40
Year 3 Cost: $755.40
Total cost for three years: $2,050.68
Xfinity Double Play Bundle (160+ Channels, 20 mbps download)
$79.99 for first 6 months
$99.99 for next 6 months
$134.95 after 12 months
Year 1 Cost: $1,079.88
Year 2 Cost: $1,619.40
Year 3 Cost: $1,619.40
Total cost for three years: $4,318.68
Some Comparative Math
Net savings by bundling:
All three years: $430 ($4,718.16 - $4,318.16)
Two years: $287.20 ($2,985.96 - $2,698.76)
One year: $113.88 ($1,193.76 - $ 1,079.88)
This is assuming at least a one year contract at those rates (though its probably two) and a third year off contract on the second year rates. Also assuming the year 2-3 rates won't change too much. You save more money in the long haul since the rates go up significantly for the individual services. If you can live without TV though, the internet only option costs just under half of the bundle for three years. Food for thought.

Thanks Shadow, that's well beyond what I was expecting lol. Not a bad deal for the first year, but after that it gets pretty steep.

If you're only worried about internet, you might save by switching to CenturyLink and get 5 or 10 Mbit DSL for a year, then switch back to Comcast.WahooLaw24 wrote:Thanks Shadow, that's well beyond what I was expecting lol. Not a bad deal for the first year, but after that it gets pretty steep.
If you trusted your neighbors and they actually were willing to pay for it, several apartments could also share via WiFi.

Re: UVA Law Students Taking Questions
If I'm using my laptop in lieu of TV, I might just do that (or even more)! The 20MBps option at Century Link is marginally more expensive than Comcast's 20MBps first year offer ($539.94 v. $509.88), but if I do CenturyLink for one year and then Comcast for the following two, it comes out to a total cost of $1,805.22 (a net savings of $245.46 over the only Comcast Option). However, it seems CenturyLink for all 3 years would be slightly cheaper than the CenturyLink/Comcast option by $65.28 and would be a net savings of $310.74 over the only Comcast option (just over 40% of a 1 bedroom Jeffersonian's rent):albanach wrote:If you're only worried about internet, you might save by switching to CenturyLink and get 5 or 10 Mbit DSL for a year, then switch back to Comcast.WahooLaw24 wrote:Thanks Shadow, that's well beyond what I was expecting lol. Internet Cost Saving Option 1:
Year 1 - CenturyLink 20MBps PURE Broadband (1 year contract)
$29.99 for first 6 months
$50.00 for next 6 months
Year 1 Cost: $539.94
Year 2 - Comcast 20MBps Performance Internet (2 year contract)
$34.99 for first 6 months
$49.99 for next 6 months
Year 2 Cost: $509.88
Year 3
$62.95 per month
Year 3 Cost: $755.40
Total Cost: $1,805.22
Internet Cost Saving Option 2:
Year 1 - CenturyLink 20MBps PURE Broadband (1 year contract)
$29.99 for first 6 months
$50.00 for next 6 months
Year 1 Cost: $539.94
Year 2 - CenturyLink 20MBps Broadband (1 year contract)
$50.00 per month
Year 2 Cost: $600.00
Year 3 - CenturyLink 20MBps Broadband (1 year contract)
$50.00 per month
Year 3 Cost: $600.00
Total Cost: $1,739.94

So let me get this straight: I get email when someone leaves their lights on in D3, or when the school is conducting one of its never ending drills, or when Sasquatoon School of Law is holding a writing contest, but not a single email to tell me classes were cancelled?

You excelled in undergraduate studies. You scored at the very top of the LSAT. You got into one of the most elite law schools in the nation. Just got an email from a school official saying that we don't get emails for class cancelation. Which is weird, because I could've sworn we got an email from Dean Ballenger or someone else last semester when the tropical storm canceled classes...StanleyF wrote:So let me get this straight: I get email when someone leaves their lights on in D3, or when the school is conducting one of its never ending drills, or when Sasquatoon School of Law is holding a writing contest, but not a single email to tell me classes were cancelled?
