What I'm saying is that it seems like a liberal arts major who spent 1 year after college waiting tables and got into NU might not have any greater shot at biglaw than had they gone to GULC or Cornell

I must've missed that the first time around. But surely, some managing partner would hire someone who already had hands on coffee delivery experience. When I'm a rich, grumpy partner I'm replacing half the associates with baristas.

In my first meeting of my first professional job, years ago, the VP of my division welcomed me to the team and mentioned to everyone that the most exciting part of my resume, to him, was my food service industry experience. He wanted me to bring the same level of service to the business's customers. So much for my undergrad degree, I guess.

Parking can be very expensive. My buildings is about 225 dollars. I've heard rumors of less but damn.

If you are going to keep a car, I'd live further up the lake. Lake shore drive is quick drive in non rush hour drives.

My brain is incompatible with not having a car because I have been an earth-killing commuter for years, but insurance plus that much to park is pretty expensive just so i can drive to a store once in a while. It's not like I'll be taking road trips to Milwaukee every weekend.

I think I'd be taking my car, but can't think of anything to do with it besides the occasional trip to Granite Peak and whatever other "mountains" Illinois has to offer, to remind my snowboard of what it's missing at home.

I've taken a few day trips just to get out of the city and explore the area. It's also useful for picking stuff up at Ikea. That said, it is quite expensive to have a car here and I don't use mine very often.
And as someone who's used to skiing in New England (and spent a winter working in Vail), it's a bit, uh, flat here.

I'm glad you mentioned Vail because it's not like New England has actual mountains either.

+1. Not sure why it has the bad rep for apartment-hunting - is it hard to use in other cities or something? I'm not sure why you'd bother with anything else in Chicago, in a student price range.
