I agree with Flips. Also remember that, like the school, our admin is composed of a bunch of slacker/splitter-esque types who will invariably wait until the very last second to do anything.

I got a C+ in one of my 1L classes. Overall GPA wasn't great, but no B- and only one other B. Given professors aren't required to give a grade below B- and the importance of grades and crappiness of the economy.... I just don't understand how a professor can give out a grade less than a B- and feel morally OK about it. Must have thought I really deserved it I guess.

So, how screwed am I?

A discretionary grade is pretty terrible and yes, the prof is a fuck face for doing that to you. I'd ask them why they gave it to you because if you made a good faith effort on the exam and wrote coherent sentences, you shouldn't get a discretionary grade.

I'd recommend maybe talking with Susie about it and your career advisor too. If you can do fine second semester and the grade is just a complete inexplicable outlier then maybe you can overcome it.

But first I'd ask the professor what the fuck they thought you did to deserve it.

Definite bullshit. If it helps, there was a prof last year who gave out 4 discretionary C's (not C+'s, C's) in first semester 1L. I know 2 people that received them and they both have really solid firm jobs this summer, so all is definitely not lost.

Giving a grade you absolutely do not have to give in a legal market where people can end up jobless with a quarter million of debt is a really douchey thing to do.

Only way I could see someone deserving a C is if they literally write nothing coherent or related to the class.
