Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
Not in time for it to be meaningful. Ranking really only matters in getting interviews versus Vandy/Tulane/Minnesota/etc at the off campus programs and bids for that come out before the ranking would change.ek5dn wrote:when should we expect updated rankings (after people transfer out)? will it be in time for oci?

Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
Well, bids are due before the end of June, and most transfer decisions don't come out until mid-to-late July. So at the least, they won't be out in time for impacting screeners.ek5dn wrote:when should we expect updated rankings (after people transfer out)? will it be in time for oci?

Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
thanks for clearing that up.
So far, I'm less than impressed by the lineup of firms for EIW and the upcoming OCI sessions. How many V50 / V100 firms actually participate in WUSTL OCI? (I should probably already know this, but...)
TIA

Oh okay; I really need to educate myself on the OCI programs lol. Thanks, I'll look in to those. Do you have any info on DC firms that participate?sublime wrote:Depends a lot if you are counting the off campus programs, which is where the majority of people I know going to a bigger firm got their job, myself included.ek5dn wrote:thanks for clearing that up.

Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
Does anyone know what happens to transfers-out who were selected for LR? It seems very likely that a non-zero amount of people get selected for LR in late June, accept it, and then transfer out.
Are those spots freed up again? What if the "next best" writer-on already settles for their second choice journal?

There's a transfer write on, so that's at least part of it.

How well percentile-wise do you need to do to have a realistic shot at biglaw in big markets like DC/Chicago?

Anyone know anything about the Thomas F. Eagleton scholarship? I just got an email about it yesterday and am thinking about applying.

Do Midwest ties count? And does top, top grades mean top 20? 15? 10? 5? Thanks!sublime wrote:Do you have ties to either? Yes for chi, but maybe to a lesser extent than ties to Chicagoland.valen wrote:Do Midwest ties count? And does top, top grades mean top 20? 15? 10? 5? Thanks!sublime wrote:Do you have ties to either? Top 20 will get you screeners and a decent shot at all/most of the major Chicago firms (K&E, Latham, Sidley, Mayer, etc.). Maybe top 25, but I wouldn't say you'd be a lock.

Most of my friends summering biglaw in DC right now were top 15 or higher, fwiwsublime wrote:Do you have ties to either? eta: at least one or two with ties landed SAs that were just below top third.

Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
I know of people in my class (c/o 2016) between median and top third who got interviews in those markets. I don't know of anyone who went there, or if they got offers, but those markets certainly seem to dip lower into the rankings from what I've seen.splitterfromhell wrote:What kind of grades would one need for regional Midwestern Big Law? Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
Rather than having a number of posts addressing different markets, would anyone mind giving some comprehensive market information (or at least filling in as much as you know)? A comprehensive table, for example, could be useful for future students. Here's a template of how it could work (feel free to fill this in, if you have information):
Market - Class rank minimum (for most screeners) - Importance of ties
NYC -
Chicago -
DC -
Boston -
STL -
Atl -
DFW -
Philly -
SV -
LA -
etc

Only one is URM; the other I'm thinking of is plain white bread (whatever that's worth, markham)sublime wrote:Sprout wrote:Most of my friends summering biglaw in DC right now were top 15 or higher, fwiwsublime wrote:Do you have ties to either? But they were urm, which kind of changes things.
Eta: At least for my year (c/o 2017) it seemed to be a lot harder to break into chicago without stellar grades compared to DC

Re: WUSTL Recent Grad (and others) Taking Questions
Re: Stl. I can only speak to 1L hiring, but Stl firms do not weigh grades as heavily as major markets. I'm assuming this is true for other small markets like Indianapolis and Columbus. They cared much, much more about ties. I'm working with people outside the top 20% who got 1L SAs because they went to the same high school a partner did, or one thing or another.
Attractiveness also matters.
Oh, and URM status.
I'd say of the 1L SAs in Stl, the people in the top 15% are a minority.
Interview well, have ties (or convince them you love stl), be likable, and you can get an SA in Stl with a lower than top 20% class rank. If you're a URM you will have no problems at all anywhere. I know a URM with a 1L SA at a non-v100 Chi firm, and she certainly is not top 10%. Definitely not top 5%.
