My section assignment showed up on Canvas.thelincolnlawyer wrote:How did you find out this information? I thought we find out tomorrow at our registrationChristineBaskets wrote:Wanted to get a second opinion on this:
I just found out I'm in DeLaurentis' LRW class. The 3 required books are TeachingLaw (electronic coursebook), A Uniform System of Citation ("The Bluebook"), and Rhetoric for Lawyers.
I was previously told to refrain from buying the latter 2 books, and to just use TeachingLaw. Thoughts?
Looks like I misinterpreted. My bad.Gray wrote:It might have been me - I definitely did not mean not to buy the bluebook! just that of the legal writing theory books, the teachinglaw website is better than the paper book (though we had a different book last year)Hand wrote:Whoever told you that was trolling you. To those who have been through Orientation at GULC... For a variety of reasons, it's looking like I won't be able to stay for the festitivities later in the evening tonight (Dean's welcome at 7pm and reception at 7:30). How much will I be missing out?

Last year the dean implied that we should start donating money right away in his welcome speech. I wouldn't have wanted to miss that.ChristineBaskets wrote:To those who have been through Orientation at GULC... I think I skipped 100% of evening activities. Survived, maybe even thrived.ChristineBaskets wrote:To those who have been through Orientation at GULC... I would borrow another person's copy of the last book to skim the readings, but generally it really wasn't necessary.Hand wrote:Whoever told you that was trolling you. Unless you need the hard copy of the book for LRW, you can also subscribe to the online Bluebook. It's super useful if you end up writing for a journal. Much easier to search for strange rules than the hard copy.EzraFitz wrote:I would borrow another person's copy of the last book to skim the readings, but generally it really wasn't necessary.Hand wrote:Whoever told you that was trolling you. You may also not need to do more than 1 yr subscription b/c I know some journals have their own subscription access. But agreed that online is better than hard copy.doctoroflaw91 wrote:Unless you need the hard copy of the book for LRW, you can also subscribe to the online Bluebook. it is most definitely optional; I can't comment on whether you'd miss out on something since I didn't go last yearthelincolnlawyer wrote:Does that mean the undergrad reception is optional and not mandatory? I'm a little tired of the redundancy of orientation already and have John Oliver tickets at 9:30 so I'd rather not go.mmmmmmkay wrote:I think I skipped 100% of evening activities. Orientation is largely worthless and just an opportunity to meet classmates and hear horror stories from Mitch Bailin.

Are these "1L 101" Workshops worth attending?

No. They serve merely to make insecure gunners feel a little better.ChristineBaskets wrote:Are these "1L 101" Workshops worth attending?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Every hour spent in a workshop would have been better spent doing homework. There was one helpful one much later in the semester about exam strategy, but otherwise just ask yourself if the topic is something you have any basic understanding of; if so, skip it.Hand wrote:No. They serve merely to make insecure gunners feel a little better.ChristineBaskets wrote:Are these "1L 101" Workshops worth attending?

Literally went to none of these and it had zero effect. Much better advice on here and from upper classmen if you need it.Glasseyes wrote:Every hour spent in a workshop would have been better spent doing homework. Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Thanks guys.
Would someone be able to explain how LRW is graded? There's a bunch of "projects" throughout the semester... Are those graded, or is just the exam graded? And is it A/B/C, Honors/Pass/Fail, ?
As far as the GoCards go, I see that there's lots of restaurants and whatnot where you can get discounts by paying with the GoCard (e.g. Subway). Does this only apply to the locations that are actually on campus?

its 10% total class participation (which includes all the projects) and the other 90% is the final memo and final brief you do i think its 40% memo 50% brief. the class is a normal curve graded classChristineBaskets wrote:Thanks guys.

Fixed this based off my LRW experience.Gray wrote:To add to the above, the other projects aren't "graded" but you lose participation points if you don't hand stuff inor don't try at all.
Also the BB exam is definitely still a thing. I think it's 10% of first semester? Not sure - check the syllabus.
